SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Marshall volleyball team finished off its trip to the Lonestar State with a dominating performance in a sweep (25-23, 25-19, 25-21) over the UTSA Roadrunners, Sunday afternoon. Redshirt junior Ciara Debell ended each set for Marshall with one of her game-high 15 kills.

The Thundering Herd improves to 13-9 and 4-5 in Conference USA. The Roadrunners fall to 13-9 and 6-3 in conference play.

"I am so proud of the growth and lessons that we learned quickly from our loss on Friday," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "Our block and the defense around it allowed us to have a calm mindset and work to score in transition. Ciara's (Debell) offense was a huge reason for the success, and Sarah (Schank) staying steady at one error as well pushed us through.

"Mion (Weldon) was explosive and a huge offensive and defensive threat. I am so proud of the work Isa (Dostal) and Destiny (Leon) put in this week with disciplined blocking. This was a team win and we're looking forward to getting back in the gym Tuesday to get to continue to grow and get better.

Debell had an all-around great performance in the match. Not only did Debell lead with 15 kills and her ridiculous .438 hitting clip, but she added a career-high six total blocks and also had eight digs. Sophomore Sarah Schank had 10 kills in the win, her eighth double-digit kill contest of the season, and also had a hitting percentage of .375. Sophomore Mion Weldon finished with seven kills and hit at a .462 clip, her 12th match of the season hitting over .300 and her fourth over .400.

The Herd finished with 16 total team blocks, the squad's 13th match of the year with 10 or more. Junior Destiny Leon and sophomore Isa Dostal had their hands in seven each. Both players had a solo block and assisted on six others.

Senior libero Amber Weber tallied 14 digs and has recorded 10 or more in all 22 matches this season. It was also her 61st career match in double figures. Sophomore Gabrielle Coulter was next with 11.

Junior Sydney Lostumo led with 21 assists and Coulter added 14. Lostumo also finished the match with three service aces.

The first set was a battle back-and-forth with 13 ties and six lead changes. UTSA jumped out to the early 3-1 lead before Marshall came back with a 3-0 run to take a 4-3 lead on a kill from Schank. The teams kept trading points before the Roadrunners built up a three-point lead at 14-11. The blockers for the Herd kept Marshall in the set with eight rejections in the frame. UTSA looked to close out the set with a 23-21 lead, but then a block from Leon and back-to-back aces from Lostumo gave Marshall the lead, 24-23. Debell capped the set with a kill and Marshall led 1-0.

The second set was a little more one-sided with just six ties and three lead changes. The Roadrunners took a four-point lead at 9-5 before Marshall rallied back and tied the set at 10-10. The Herd used a 3-0 run off kills from Weldon and Debell and another block to take the lead up to 14-11. Throughout the rest of the set, UTSA could only close to within two points. The Herd kept the lead, and Debell finished off the second set with her eighth kill of the day.

In the third set, Marshall took the lead from the start and never let the home town take the advantage as there were three ties and no lead changes. The Herd had a 3-0 run to take a 6-3 lead and then UTSA had a 3-0 run to tie it up just before Marshall rolled off a 7-0 run to take a 13-6 lead. The Roadrunners could not get the score any closer then within three as the Herd dominated the final set for the sweep. Debell tallied seven kills including the final point, for the third time.

Marshall returns to the Cam Henderson Center for two more Conference USA matches. The Herd takes on Louisiana Tech on Friday, Nov. 1 at 6 p.m., and then the Charlotte 49ers on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 1 p.m.
