HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall volleyball team earned its second-straight sweep (25-17, 25-13, 25-21) with a defeat of Louisiana Tech, Friday night in the Cam Henderson Center.
The Thundering Herd improves to 14-9 and 5-5 in Conference USA. The Lady Techsters fall to 12-11 and 2-7 in league play.
"This win gives us some confidence going further," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "We went on a five-match losing streak and then we were able to pull out UTSA and then come in here and win again. I think we are just getting into the swing of how we play so we need all the confidence we can get. I'm really happy with the way they played and the level-headedness that we had to stay consistent. Consistency is key for us right now. We are executing at a good level, but we still have some things to work on and some errors that we don't need."
"But, a sweep is great for them because they work so hard. This was a great win, a great win at home and I couldn't be happier."
Sophomore Sarah Schank led the team with 11 kills, her ninth match of the year in double-digits. Marshall had a balanced attack as redshirt junior Ciara Debell, junior Destiny Leon and sophomore Mion Weldon had eight kills each. Sophomore Joelle Coulter added seven. Louisiana Tech struggled on the attack with 22 errors and a team hitting percentage of .082.
Junior Sydney Lostumo led with 19 assists and sophomore Gabrielle Coulter had 11 assists as well as 11 digs for her seventh double-double of the year. Senior Amber Weber recorded 12 digs and had eight assists. Weber extended her consecutive matches streak of 10 or more digs to 26 games and brings her season tally to 390. Freshman Meagan Camden recorded a service ace for the third-straight match.
At the net, the Herd finished with six total team blocks. Leon assisted on four bringing her season total up to 112. Sophomore Isa Dostal had two and now has 106 for the year.
The Lady Techsters began the first set able to stay one point ahead of Marshall until the Herd rolled off a 5-0 run to take the lead at 8-4, leading to a Louisiana Tech timeout. The deficit was cut to two, 8-6, however that was the closest that the visitors got through the rest of the set. The Herd kept running with three different 3-0 runs to build the lead to eight at 16-8. A kill from Leon moved it to set point and then J. Coulter finished it off with her fourth kill of the frame.
Marshall dominated from start to finish in the second set. The Herd began the period with a 5-0 run leading to a Lady Techsters timeout. Louisiana Tech battled back to close within two points at 7-5. However, Marshall had another 3-0 run – aided by two more LA Tech errors – and extended the lead. Marshall kept rolling off more points and finished the set with a 4-0 run. A kill from Weldon got the final run started, followed by an ace from Weber and then kills from Schank and another by Weldon to end the set.
The third set looked as if the Lady Techsters were going to force a fourth set. After taking the lead at 3-2, LA Tech built out a four-point lead at 12-8 that led to a Marshall timeout. After the break in the action, the Herd used a 6-0 run to take back the lead at 14-12 leading to a timeout from the Lady Techsters. Weldon and Leon combined for back-to-back blocks including on the point that tied the set at 12-12. Louisiana Tech tied it up at 14-14 but Marshall never relinquished the lead and stayed just out reach. Schank's 11th kill of the match moved it to set-point at 24-21. Debell then finished the night with a blast from the right side to give Marshall the sweep.
The Thundering Herd returns to action with a home match against the Charlotte 49ers on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 1 p.m.
