HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall volleyball team took down the Charlotte 49ers in three sets (25-20, 25-16, 25-13) Sunday afternoon in the Cam Henderson Center. It was the third-straight sweep for the Herd.
The Thundering Herd improves to 15-9 and 6-5 in Conference USA play. The 49ers fall to 13-14 and 2-8 in league play.
"What a fun weekend," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "We were able to come out in front of two awesome crowds and stay committed to two very different game plans. Ciara (Debell) did so well offensively and executed what we've been working on all week. Amber (Weber) continues to grow as a leader and impresses me, 25 digs is a huge accomplishment, but it's so normal for what she does day to day. Our serve and pass game was strong today and continues to improve."
Redshirt junior Ciara Debell recorded her 10th double-double of the season leading the way with 17 kills and adding a season-high 15 digs. Sophomore Sarah Schank had eight kills and sophomores Joelle Coulter and Isa Dostal added seven each. Junior Sydney Lostumo led with 23 assists and sophomore Gabrielle Coulter had 19. Lostumo also tied her career-high with five service aces.
Senior Amber Weber recorded 25 digs in the match, an average of 8.33 per set. Along with Weber and Debell, Schank was the third player to finish in double figures with 13 digs. As a team, Marshall totaled 70 digs to Charlotte's 58.
The first set began as a back-and-forth battle with eight ties and three lead changes. Marshall had three different 3-0 runs to be able to stay just ahead of the 49ers. Charlotte pulled it back within one point at 19-18. The Herd again kept up the attack to stay out in front. A kill from junior Destiny Leon brought it to set-point at 24-20. Debell finished it off with her fifth kill to put Marshall ahead 1-0.
The Herd dominated the final two sets as Charlotte never had a lead or even tied the score. Marshall began the second set with a 4-0 run as Lostumo had back-to-back service aces to help give the Herd the lead. Marshall then used a 5-0 run to build the lead to eight, 11-3. Charlotte then had a 5-0 run to pull back within three at 11-8. The teams traded points back-and-forth until a kill from sophomore Mion Weldon started a 4-0 run for the Herd. The 49ers could only pull within four points of Marshall and then the Herd rolled off a 5-0 run to end the set.
In the third set, the closest the 49ers got to the Herd was trailing by one at 3-2. Marshall then put a long run together of 7-0 and led 12-3. A kill from Debell put the Herd at five points away from the win, 20-11. Marshall scored the final three points of the match to take the last set, 25-13. Schank had the final point with her eighth kill of the day.
Marshall heads back out on the road next weekend down to Florida to take on FIU (Nov. 8) and Florida Atlantic (Nov. 10). The Herd will finish the regular season at home against the UAB Blazers on Nov. 14 at 6 p.m.
