Volleyball Back on the Road for Conference Match at FIU

Marshall Volleyball Match Notes

MIAMI, Fla. – The Marshall volleyball team is racking up more mileage this weekend with a Conference USA match at FIU. First serve is set for Friday at 6 p.m.

The Thundering Herd enters the match with an overall record of 15-9 and 6-5 in C-USA. The Panthers come in at 9-14 overall and 2-9 in league play. There will not be a live video stream for the match.

Last Meeting: Sept. 29, 2019 in Huntington – The Herd won in four sets.

The regular season is coming down to its final stretch and Marshall looks to secure a spot in the Conference USA Tournament after not making it in 2018. The match at FIU is one of three remaining contests for the Herd. Marshall has won its last three matches and all by sweeps over UTSA, Louisiana Tech and Charlotte. Following the sweeps of the Lady Techsters and the 49ers, senior libero Amber Weber was named conference Defensive Player of the Week after tallying 37 more digs including 25 in the win over Charlotte.

The Herd enters the weekend ranked 10th in the NCAA in blocks per set with 2.83. Junior Destiny Leon and sophomore Isa Dostal have created quite the rejection tandem at the net. Leon leads the team with 114 total blocks (25 solo, 89 assists), and her 1.37 blocks per set leads the conference and is ranked 16th in the country. Dostal is right behind with 107 total blocks (14 solo, 93 assists), and her 1.35 per set is second in conference and 22nd in the nation. Redshirt junior Ciara Debell (61 total, 0.73 per set) and sophomore Mion Weldon (54 total, 0.72) have also added to the Herd's success at the net.

Staying on defense, Weber continues to excel in her role as the floor leader. The senior has 415 digs and is fourth in the league with 4.94 per set. However, if Weber is not getting the dig herself she has been excellent at helping to direct players around to be in position for the dig. As a team, Marshall is averaging 15.58 digs per set which is fifth in C-USA. Debell is second on the team with 217.

Debell remains the leader on the offensive side with 345 kills, an average of 4.11 per set that places her third in the league. Sophomore Sarah Schank is second on the team with 182. Sophomore Gabrielle Coulter leads with 490 assists and junior Syndey Lostumo is next with 364. Weber is closing in on 100 assists with 98. Lostumo leads the Herd with 31 aces and Coulter is second with 21.

Opponent
The Panthers are looking to close out the regular season on a high note with three matches remaining, and after having lost its last eight. The most recent was a four-set loss to UTSA at home. Offensively, FIU features three players with over 200 kills in Fiorella Murillo (242), Sidney Henderson (233) and Gina Lipscomb (217). The last time these teams met back in September, Henderson led with 13 kills and Murillo had 12. Abbie Hughes has been the main setter this season with 895 assists, and she had 33 in the last matchup.

Lina Bernier leads the squad with 459 digs and 5.28 per set, which is good for second in the conference. She had 26 digs in the last meeting. Hughes is next with 256. FIU is averaging 1.93 blocks per set this season. Chelsea Hudson and Emma Erteltova lead the team with 57 and 52, respectively.

Following the match in Miami, the Herd heads to Boca Raton to take on the Florida Atlantic Owls on Sunday at 12 p.m. Marshall then returns to the Cam Henderson Center for the regular season finale against the UAB Blazers on Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. for Senior Day.
