MIAMI, Fla. – The Marshall volleyball team came back from trailing 2-0 to defeat the FIU Panthers in five sets (23-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-21, 15-13) Friday night on the road. Redshirt junior Ciara Debell and sophomore Sarah Schank led the way combining for 49 kills.

The Thundering Herd improves to 16-9 and 6-5 in Conference USA. The Panthers fall to 9-15 overall and 2-10 in league play.

"The resilience they showed tonight was unmatched," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "After trailing 0-2, we had to remind them to play free and take the pressure off. That's when our pins took over the match, with Ciara Debell and Sarah Schank. Our setters continued to feed them the ball and they started executing. Joelle Coulter continues to be a stable piece of our offense and so is Isa Dostal on defense with her blocks.

"It was a fight until the end and we were able to stay together and pull out a hard fought win."

Debell had a season-high 27 kills and Schank set a career-high with 22. Schank's previous career-high was 16 against Georgetown and again at Charlotte earlier this season. Sophomore Joelle Coulter added eight kills and junior Destiny Leon had six. Junior Sydney Lostumo led with a career-high 37 assists and sophomore Gabrielle Coulter had 22.

Marshall's defense stepped it up during the contest with 20 total blocks and 76 digs. Senior Amber Weber led the Herd with 20 digs and Schank was second with 19. Debell tallied 13 digs and G. Coulter had 10. At the net, sophomore Isa Dostal assisted on a season-high 10 blocks, which also tied her career-high set against Furman in 2018. Sophomore Mion Weldon assisted on seven blocks which was also a career-best. Debell added to her all-around great performance with five total blocks, two solo and three assists. Leon had five total blocks as well. J. Coulter tied her career-high with three assisted blocks.

Marshall battled in the first set as there were 13 ties and seven lead changes. FIU tied the set up for the final time at 23-23 and then scored the final two points. The Herd did set the tone at the net for the rest of the set with five blocks including four rejections during a 5-0 run when Marshall went up 11-8.

The second set was still a steady back-and-forth affair with 11 ties and three lead changes. FIU took the lead for the final time at 17-16 and held out the rest of the way. Marshall did add three points to narrow the gap when FIU had it at set-point, however the Panthers took the set 25-21 and looked to try and take a sweep from the Herd on Senior Night.

The third set belonged to Marshall as there were just four ties and three lead changes. The Herd grabbed the lead for good at 5-4 and then used runs of 3-0 and 4-0 to begin to widen the distance over FIU. Marshall took the set to avoid the sweep and begin the comeback.

Still trailing 2-1, the fourth set featured seven ties and four lead changes, but Marshall kept up the fight. The Herd tied the set at 19-19 with kills from Debell and Schank that led to a Panther timeout. After FIU regained the lead, Schank exploded for three-straight kills and the run went to 4-0 on an error from the Panthers. Marshall led 23-21. Two more errors from FIU closed it out and forced the fifth and decisive set.

The fifth set initially looked like it was going to go FIU's way as Marshall trailed by three, 10-7. The Herd then rallied with a 3-0 run to tie things up at 10-10. The teams traded points and Marshall took the lead, 13-12, on an FIU error. The Herd defense kept up the intensity and forced two more Panther errors to complete the comeback.

Marshall stays in the state of Florida for a match against the Florida Atlantic Owls on Sunday at 12 p.m. The Herd then returns to the Cam Henderson Center for Senior Day and the regular season finale against the UAB Blazers on Nov. 14.
