Volleyball Clinches Spot in Conference USA Tournament with Win at FAU

Fifth-straight win for the Herd

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Marshall volleyball team secured a place in the upcoming Conference USA Tournament with a five-set victory (25-27, 25-21, 25-21, 13-25, 15-8) over the Florida Atlantic Owls, Sunday afternoon. The Herd won its fifth-straight match.

The Thundering Herd improves to 17-9 and 8-5 in league play. The Owls fall to 13-10 overall and 7-5 in conference action. Head coach Ari Aganus in her first season at the helm with the Herd, gets Marshall to return to C-USA postseason play after missing out on the tournament in 2018.

"We showed resilience once again after a tough fight on Friday," coach Aganus said. "We battled with a great team today. We continued to stick to the game plan even when we were down. I'm excited to see what the future holds for this group."

Redshirt junior Ciara Debell made it back-to-back matches with 20 or more kills, with 21, while back in her home state. Debell also had a .347 hitting percentage. Sophomore Sarah Schank was second on the team with 10 kills and led with three aces. Sophomore Mion Weldon had nine kills and finished with a .438 hitting percentage. Junior Syndey Lostumo led with 29 assists and had two service aces. Sophomore Gabrielle Coulter had 12 assists and added seven digs.

Senior libero Amber Weber was all over the court again with 27 digs. She has tallied 20 or more digs in three-straight matches and 10 or more digs in 29-straight. The Herd finished the match with 11 total team blocks. Junior Destiny Leon had six total blocks with two solo and four assists. Sophomore Isa Dostal assisted on four blocks and Weldon had three block assists.

The first set had six ties and five lead changes, however the story was how the Owls finished the set. Marshall led 23-17, before FAU went on a 7-0 run and pushed it to set-point. The teams traded points back-and-forth before Florida Atlantic finally ended the set 27-25. Weber had 11 of her 27 digs in the first set.

Marshall rallied in the second set using a 6-0 run to build out an 8-2 lead resulting in an Owls timeout. The Herd led throughout the frame despite FAU tying it up at 21-21. Marshall ended the set with a 4-0 run to tie the match at 1-1.

Florida Atlantic began the third set up 3-0 and then Marshall rallied to tie it up at 5-5 and then take an 8-5 lead. The Herd had two more runs of 3-0 to continue to keep its distance from the Owls and go up by four, 20-16. Marshall reached set-point on a kill from sophomore Joelle Coulter. FAU scored two more points before a kill from Debell gave the Herd a 2-1 lead.

Florida Atlantic dominated the fourth set, 25-13, and pushed the match to the fifth and decisive set to try and grab the win on Senior Day.

The Herd bounced back strong in the fifth set getting out to a 6-2 lead that caused FAU to call timeout. The closest the Owls could get was two points as Marshall played well in the clutch. A 4-0 run that included back-to-back kills from Schank put the Herd up 12-6. A kill from J. Coulter, her eighth of the day, moved things to match-point and then the 29th attack error of the match from the Owls ended the day as Marshall took the win.

It was the third-straight loss for Florida Atlantic as the Owls look to secure a spot in the conference tournament as well.

Marshall returns to the Cam Henderson Center for the regular season finale and Senior Day on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. The UAB Blazers come to Huntington as seniors Ivana Trencheva, Amber Weber and Michaela Ahlenslager will be honored before the match.
