Volleyball Hosts Charlotte in Conference USA Match

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall volleyball team is back in action on the Cam Henderson Center floor on Sunday as the Charlotte 49ers come to town. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
 
The Thundering Herd is 14-9 overall and 5-5 in Conference USA. The 49ers come in at 13-13 overall and 2-7 in league play.

Marshall is coming off a sweep of the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters, Friday night at home. The Herd had a well-balanced offensive attack as sophomore Sarah Schank led with 11 kills. Redshirt junior Ciara Debell, junior Destiny Leon and sophomore Mion Weldon had eight kills each and sophomore Joelle Coulter added seven. Marshall's defense forced Louisiana Tech to struggle on the attack with a team hitting percentage of .082.
 
Debell remains the team-leader in kills with 328, an average of 4.05 per set. Schank is second with 174. The Herd continues to use the two setter rotation with sophomore Gabrielle Coulter leading with 471 assists and junior Sydney Lostumo adding another 341. Lostumo leads the squad with 26 service aces.
 
Senior libero Amber Weber tallied 12 more digs against Louisiana Tech bringing her season total to 390. She also continued her consecutive matches streak with 10 or more digs to 26-straight going back to last season. Weber had 30 digs the last time Marshall played Charlotte back on Oct. 4.
 
The Herd entered the weekend sixth in the nation in blocks per set. The team totaled six in the victory over the Lady Techsters. Marshall is averaging 2.90 blocks per set. Leon has 112 total blocks this season and sophomore Isa Dostal has 106.
 
Opponent
The Charlotte 49ers are coming in off back-to-back losses to the teams at the top of the conference in No. 23 WKU and No. 18 Rice. Charlotte was swept in both. The 49ers currently sit in 11th place in the league standings and are looking to gain some ground with just five conference matches left, including Sunday's at Marshall. Following the match in Huntington, Charlotte's remaining regular season matches are at Louisiana Tech, at UAB and home versus UTEP and Florida Atlantic.
 
Sydney Rowan has been a force offensively for Charlotte with 378 kills, an average of 4.15 per set, and she had 26 in the last meeting against the Herd. Nalani Lyde needs just one more kill to get to 200 for the year and Jocelyn Stoner is third on the team with 172. Annika Wetterstrom has been the main setter and has 805 assists.
 
Senior libero Yumi Garcia, a Senior CLASS Award Finalist, leads Conference USA with 608 digs. Garcia is averaging 6.61 per set and had 31 in the last meeting against Marshall. The 49ers as a team are averaging 18.39 digs per set. At the net, Charlotte is averaging 2.47 blocks per set good for second in the league. Stoner leads the team with 98 total blocks.

The regular season is winding down and Marshall has just three more matches following the contest against Charlotte. The Herd's remaining matchups are at FIU (Nov. 8), at Florida Atlantic (Nov. 10) and finally at home for Senior Night against the UAB Blazers on Nov. 14 at 5 p.m.
