Calcagno, Evans, Rutherford and Turner join the Herd
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall volleyball head coach Ari Aganus announced the signing of four players for the 2020 recruiting class on Wednesday. Anna Calcagno, Alyssa Evans, Treasure Rutherford and Dominique Turner will join the Herd as freshmen in the fall.
"I am so excited for this first recruiting class my staff and I have put together here at Marshall," coach Aganus said. "Each of these young women bring their own style and energy to our program. They are a fun group that work hard and have been bought in from the day they stepped on campus for a visit."
Anna Calcagno comes from Saint Charles, Ill., and plays for St. Francis High School. So far in her career she has tallied 923 kills. In 2019 Calcagno has 432 kills, 146 blocks, 462 digs and 72 aces. She is a three-time all-conference honoree and was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Crossroads Tournament. Calcagno also garnered the 2019 Kane County Volleyball Player of the Year. With her club team she was a member of two-time national champions, an All-American, MVP All-American, 2018 Phenom, three-time JVA Ankle Watch List and on the Under Armour All-America Volleyball Watch List. Calcagno chose Marshall because, "Marshall had everything I was looking for in a university and it felt like home."
"Anna brings power overall from every aspect of her game that will help push us to the next level," coach Aganus said. "With her high volleyball IQ the transition from High School and Club will be seamless to Marshall with her power offensively and ability to cover the court defensively."
Alyssa Evans hails from Berea, Ky., and plays for Madison Southern High School. She owns the single-season and career blocks record at Madison Southern. Evans is a three-time member of the All-District team, and an AVCA Under Armour All-Region selection. Her team was the 2019 District Champions as well as the champions in the Dink Scott Memorial and the Capital City Classic Tournaments in 2019. While playing for her club team, her squad finished fifth in 2019 at the AAU Nationals and had a Silver Medal finish in the Buckeye Battle in 2018 and 2019. Evans chose Marshall because, "the campus, current players, current coaching staff and everyone makes me feel welcomed."
"Alyssa is a dynamic middle, quick on offense and will be a force at the net, both offensively and with her block," coach Aganus said. "Her quick arm and hustle in transition set her apart from many other middles in her class."
Treasure Rutherford comes from West Bloomfield, Mich., and plays for Walled Lake Central the alma mater of current Herd volleyball sophomore Mion Weldon. She began her high school career at Clawson High School her freshman and sophomore years before transferring to Walled Lake Central. Rutherford has been named All-Conference in volleyball and she has also starred in track and field as well as basketball. She chose Marshall because, "of the family environment. How everybody in the community comes together and looks out for each other including the volleyball coaches who were amazing to be around, comfortable to talk to and fun to hang out with."
"Treasure's raw talent will be exciting to develop," coach Aganus said. "She has so much to offer already with her physicality, as she grows she will be a true strength for us."
Dominique Turner hails from Paterson, N.J., and plays for Pace Academy. She has helped lead her high school to three-straight state championships. Turner has also been honored four times on the All-Region team. She has appeared in the GVCA Senior All-Star Match. While playing with her club team the squad finished as 2018 National Champions. Turner chose Marshall because, "I loved the school and I think academically it provides me what I need."
"Dominique is a technically sound libero that commands the court with a presence that is unmatched," coach Aganus said. "Her hustle and spirit will be an immediate impact for our 2020 season."
