SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Sophomore guard Taevion Kinsey recorded the second double-double of his career in Marshall men's basketball's (1-2) 74-64 loss to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in South Bend on Friday night.

"I thought the defense was really good after we got past the first seven minutes and I think we outscored them by seven after that point," Marshall head coach Dan D'Antoni said after the loss. "We just have to keep going. There are never morale victories. But for a young team, and I wouldn't say this about last year's team, but this young team, played well and didn't get knocked off the floor. They came back, found their composure and I think we have to keep growing from here."

Kinsey had 16 points and 11 rebounds in the contest. He went 7-for-13 from the field with a game-high five assists.

Junior guard Jarrod West added 14 points on a 5-of-12 night from the field. He added five rebounds to his stat line as he and Kinsey each played all 40 minutes.

Redshirt sophomore forward Iran Bennett brought up a trio of Marshall student athletes with 10 or more points despite battling foul trouble all night. Bennett also brought down eight boards and rejected a shot.

Junior forward Jannson Williams and redshirt freshman forward Cam Brooks-Harris each blocked a pair of shots. Williams added six points, while Brooks-Harris scored seven points and had seven rebounds.

The Herd kept the game close in the first few minutes trailing by no more than three in the first two-and-a-half minutes of the contest.

The Fighting Irish went on runs of eight and nine points, including a 12-2 run from the 16:06 mark to 10:23, as it led 25-8 at the second media timeout. However, the Herd answered with a 7-0 run on a pair of baskets from Jarrod West and a three from freshman Marko Sarenac to cut the deficit to 25-15 with just under 10 minutes left in the opening half.

MU went on another run across a three-minute span of time with Kinsey scoring on a jumper, Brooks-Harris draining a three, a Kinsey free-throw and a put back by Brooks-Harris for an 8-0 run and to pull within four, 31-27, with 4:33 left in the half.

Notre Dame jumped back out to a double-digit lead and led 40-29 at halftime.

West opened the half with a three to cut the ND lead back to single digits, but the Irish's John Mooney then connected on a pair of baskets to extend its lead back to 45-32. Mooney finished with 28 points and 16 rebounds for a double-double.

Trailing 49-36 with 15:29 on the clock, Marshall went on a 10-0 run, its largest of the game. Freshman center Goran Miladinovic made a jumper, West made a layup, Jannson Williams hit a jumper, and Kinsey drained jumper and made a layup to cut the deficit to three, 49-46, with about 10 minutes to go in the game.

Marshall trailed by 10 or more points for under a minute in the final 10 minutes of the game.

NOTES
Marshall held Notre Dame to just 31.6 percent from the field (24-76) for the game and to just 28 percent shooting (10-36) in the second half.

The Herd had three players with 10 or more points for the second time this season.

MU went 26-for-65 from field (40 percent) in the ballgame.

Kinsey tied his career-high in rebounds with 11, which he set in the CIT Championship game (Apr. 4) against Green Bay.

Kinsey had five assists in a game for the second time this season.
Bennett's 10 points fell one short of a career-high and it was the third time in his career in double-figure scoring.

There were 103 more points scored in tonight's contest than the first meeting between the two squads in 1913 in which there were only 36 total points.
