Marshall held the lead for a good portion of the first eight minutes of the game extending its lead to a game-high seven points when Kinsey made a free-throw at the 12:13 mark as the Herd lead 19-12.

However, Cougars guard Grant Riller helped his team to a 10-0 run, in which he scored nine of the points, to put the Herd at a 22-19 deficit halfway through the first half.

Marshall regained the lead with seven minutes remaining in the half, but ultimately CofC tied the game right before the break, 35-35.

In the second half, the contest was tied 14:40 left, but the Cougars took the lead at the 13:48 mark and didn't relinquish it the rest of the way as they won by a 10-point margin.
