Beckett Named C-USA Defensive Player of the Week

Herd defender racked up 13 tackles Friday

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Marshall linebacker Tavante Beckett was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.

Beckett tallied 13 tackles (six solo), a fumble recovery and return of 16 yards, along with a pass breakup in Marshall's 31-10 victory over Louisiana Tech. With the Thundering Herd defense backed up to its own 11 early in the fourth quarter, he raced into the backfield on 4th and 1 and scooped up the loose ball, rumbling to the LA Tech 40 to set up the game-clinching Brenden Knox touchdown run. The Chesapeake, Virginia, native was all over the field for the Herd, leading a unit that limited the league's top offense to just 10 points, 67 rushing yards and 261 yards of total offense. LA Tech also went just 6-for-17 on 3rd down attempts and 0-2 on fourth down.

Marshall (7-3 overall, 5-1 C-USA) will be back in action Saturday when it visits Charlotte (5-5, 3-3) Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff. The game will be carried by Stadium.
