HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's basketball team began the 2019-20 season with an 89-40 victory over the Kentucky Christian Knights, Tuesday night in the Cam Henderson Center. Junior Kristen Mayo led all scorers with a career-high 19 points.
The Thundering Herd begins the 2019-20 season 1-0.
"It's good to be 1-0," Herd head coach Tony Kemper said. "It's good to start the year with a win and good to do it here at home. We have a lot of room to get better, and I think we have a group that will go to work to get better. I think the meshing of a group that has experience that knows how to play with a group that has quite a bit of talent that is learning, they all can play but we just have to figure out how all the pieces fit together."
Mayo just edged out freshman Savannah Wheeler for the lead in points. Wheeler had an excellent debut with 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field, 2-of-3 from three-point range and 4-for-4 from the line. Junior Taylor Pearson scored 12 points and had five assists while redshirt senior Khadaijia Brooks also finished in double-figures with 11. Brooks was near a double-double as she grabbed eight rebounds and upped her career total to 401 boards.
The Marshall defense forced 33 turnovers with 24 coming off steals. The last time the Herd tallied at least 20 steals in a game was the last time Marshall played Kentucky Christian (26) back on Dec. 18, 2017. Mayo along with junior Dazha Congleton led the team with five each. Wheeler finished with four steals and freshman Alexis Johnson had three. Brooks, Pearson and sophomore Kia Sivils each had two thefts. Freshman Sky Thomas added in the last one. Congleton, playing back in her hometown, scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds in her Marshall debut.
Senior Ashley Saintigene was back in the lineup after playing just nine games last season due to a knee injury. In her 23 minutes on the floor she scored two points, grabbed six boards and had three blocks. Saintigene has 84 blocks in her career and is just four away from passing Lisa Pruner for eighth all-time in program history. Fellow senior Princess Clemons scored four points, had four rebounds and one block. Junior Brianna Toney scored on her first shot of the season and added one blocked shot as well as the Herd finished with seven swats.
Pearson began the game on a tear for the Herd scoring the first eight points of the game including burying the first two three-pointers of the season. Mayo caught fire as well nailing two three's in the period. Marshall scored the first 23 points of the contest before the Knights finally scored on the 17th shot attempt of the quarter, a made three, with 1:40 left on the clock. KCU ended the first quarter with a 7-0 run and the Herd led by 16, 23-7.
Things slowed down a bit in the second quarter as Marshall's shooting percentage fell from 56.3 to 43.8. However, the Herd defense still held the Knights to just 10 points in the period and went in at the half leading 40-17.
Wheeler took off in the third quarter scoring 11 points going 4-for-4 from the floor, 1-for-1 from three and 2-for-2 at the line. Marshall put up 26 points in the quarter on 50 percent shooting from the field. The Herd defense forced 12 KCU turnovers with 10 coming from steals. Mayo seized four steals in the quarter, Wheeler had three and Pearson recorded two. Marshall used a 14-0 run in the third to extend the lead to 33 (59-26).
In the fourth quarter the Herd rolled off a 13-0 run over a five minute span to take a 47-point lead. Mayo scored seven of her 19 points in the fourth. Johnson scored the final basket of the day with a layup off a fast break.
Marshall returns to the court on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m., as Norfolk State travels to Huntington.
