SEATTLE – The 11th-ranked Marshall men's soccer team's 2019 season came to an end Sunday night, 4-1, in the third round of the NCAA Tournament at No. 6 Washington.
The Thundering Herd ends the year with a 16-3-3 record. The Huskies improve to 17-3 and move on to play at the 3rd-ranked Georgetown Hoyas in the Quarterfinals.
Marshall was outshot 23-6 in the match and 13-2 on goal. The Huskies scored first in the eighth minute. Junior Jamil Roberts stepped up for a penalty kick in the 24th minute and converted for the equalizer against one of the best keepers in the country in Sam Fowler, who is second in the NCAA in goals against average entering the match. For Roberts, it was his eighth goal of the season, a career-high and second on the team.
Washington scored the go-ahead goal in the 43rd minute. Marshall trailed 2-1 at the halftime break. The Huskies scored two more times in the second frame.
Redshirt senior keeper Paulo Pita was busy during the match recording a season-high nine saves.
The Herd had a record-breaking season. The 16 wins bested the old mark of 14 set by the 2000 Marshall squad that also won the Mid-American Conference Regular Season title. The three losses are also a program record for the fewest in a season set by the 2000 team and tied in 2010 and 2012.
Marshall moved into the NCAA/United Soccer Coaches Poll back on Oct. 15, with a ranking of 21st. It was the first time the Herd was ranked since Oct. 1, 2001. Marshall also stayed in the Top 25 for the rest of the season and peaked with the No. 11 spot leading into the NCAA Tournament. The Herd saw its attendance steadily rise throughout the season, culminating in record-breaking crowds for Marshall's final two home matches.
The Herd won the Conference USA Regular Season Championship after being picked to finish fourth in the preseason coaches' poll. Marshall finished off the double-championship feat after defeating the Charlotte 49ers with a Golden Goal by junior Pedro Dolabella in double overtime. The Herd was most likely looking at least an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament, but the C-USA Cup win guaranteed Marshall its first ever trip into the NCAA postseason.
During a packed NCAA Selection Show watch party, Marshall learned that it had earned a first round bye and would be hosting a second round match. In front of a record crowd of 2,126, the Herd defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers, 2-1. Marshall's first NCAA Tournament match, and its first NCAA Tournament win.
Redshirt freshman Milo Yosef had a banner season with 12 goals. Yosef became the first Herd player to score double-digit goals in a season since Tom Jackson in 2011, and scored the most by a Herd player since Hall of Famer Byron Carmichael put up 15 goals in his senior season of 2002. Yosef led Conference USA in six offensive categories and was named Offensive MVP and Freshman of the Year.
Head coach Chris Grassie in just his third season at the helm has led Marshall on a steady climb. With eight wins in each of his first two seasons – as well as advancing to the semi-finals in the C-USA Tournament both years – Grassie doubled his win total and was named Coach of the Year.
The 2019 senior class of Paulo Pita, Illal Osmanu, Carlos Diaz-Salcedo, Jonas Westmeyer and Bryce Notardonato were all major pieces to the Herd's success. Pita played every minute in goal this season and recorded eight shutouts, the second-most in a season in team history, and was named the C-USA Co-Golden Glove Award winner. Osmanu was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week back-to-back weeks in October and was also honored as an all-conference First Team member. Diaz-Salcedo, the only player still on the team from the pre-Grassie days, was named the C-USA Tournament Defensive MVP and garnered All-Academic team honors. Westmeyer was second on the team in assists with nine, including the helpers on four game-winners. Notardonato was the back-up keeper who provided immense help and work to his teammates in practice.
Roberts with his 10 assists, tied the program record for most in a season and led Conference USA. The junior was also among the leaders in the country in assists as he entered the match at Washington tied for fifth in the NCAA.
Marshall was 12th in the country in scoring offense this season with 2.19 goals per game and tied for fifth, with third-ranked Georgetown, in total goals with 46 coming into today's action.
The future looks very bright for the Marshall men's soccer team, building off its best season in program history.
