Debell led Herd with 422 kills
AVCA All-Region Teams
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall volleyball redshirt junior outside hitter Ciara Debell was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-South Region Team, the organization announced Tuesday.
AVCA All-Region teams are broken down into 10 regions with 14 players named on each and a few more additional names for each region as Honorable Mention. Debell is Marshall's first player honored since Allie Kellerman, Ally Kiekover and Madison Hill were named All-South Honorable Mentions in 2016. Debell, however, is the first Herd player named above Honorable Mention since Jalicia Ross was named All-Midwest Region in 2008.
"What a great honor for Ciara," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "This year has been a staple in her career and set the tone for her senior season. She continues to grow and has such an urge to learn that she will only keep getting better. I'm so proud of her and all of the hard works she's put in. This honor is so well deserved."
Debell led Marshall with 422 kills, an average of 4.18 per set. Just behind her total of 437, average of 4.24 per set, in 2018. Her 2019 average of 4.18 kills per set is good for eighth all-time in program history. Her career mark of 4.21 kills per set, while in a Herd uniform, is second all-time behind Marshall Athletics Hall of Famer Kelly-Anne Billingy's 5.15.
The Ocala, Fla., native came to Marshall after spending her freshman, and a portion of her sophomore seasons at Florida Gulf Coast. Debell suffered an injury as a sophomore and was able to acquire a redshirt season. She then transferred to Marshall in 2018 and has dominated for the Herd since. She has tallied 859 kills (945 total career) in her two seasons with the Green & White, as well as adding another 35 service aces, 492 digs and 123 total blocks. Debell tallied 12 double-doubles for the year in kills and digs.
The all-around performer was named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week three times and an All-Conference First Team selection. Debell recorded 10 or more kills in 24-of-28 matches with a season-high 27 at FIU. The outside hitter had five matches with 20 or more. She dominated at the Bulldog Invite (Sept. 6-7) hosted by Georgetown and was named Tournament MVP. She finished the weekend with 47 kills, a hitting percentage of .333, 28 digs and nine total blocks as Marshall went 3-0. She was named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week for the first time after the tournament on Sept. 9.
Debell was at her best during the stretch run at the end of the year as the Herd finished the regular season with six-straight wins to help secure the No. 4 seed in the C-USA Tournament. Marshall was picked to finish 10th in the preseason coaches' poll. Over the final six games of the regular season, Debell tallied 109 kills, an average of 4.74 per set, a hitting percentage of .338, 65 digs, and 18 total blocks. She was named C-USA Offensive Player of the Week back-to-back times on Nov. 11 and 18 to end the year.
The redshirt junior put the team on her shoulders in the Herd's final road trip of the regular season, down to Debell's home state of Florida. Debell took over in the third set at FIU as the Herd trailed 2-0. She helped Marshall avoid the sweep and pull of the comeback to take the match in five sets. Debell finished with 27 kills, 13 digs and a hitting percentage of .311 as she had just four errors in 74 total attacks. She came right back with 21 more kills and a hitting percentage of .347 as the Herd won another five-set match at Florida Atlantic. Debell ended the regular season with 21 kills and a .391 hitting percentage back on the Cam Henderson Center floor for the regular season finale win over UAB.
