TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Marshall women's basketball team used a 16-3 run late in the fourth to power its way to a 72-60 win at Indiana State, Tuesday night in the Hulman Center. Junior Kristen Mayo scored 11 of her 13 points in the fourth.
The Thundering Herd improves to 5-3 and the Sycamores fall to 2-6.
"It was a good road win," Herd head coach Tony Kemper said. "I'm proud of our team's fight and I thought our focus was pretty good today. We kind of found a way. There were some ups and downs but for the most part we played pretty tough. We made just enough plays at the end to get out of here with the win."
Freshman Savannah Wheeler led all scorers with 16 points. She was 9-of-10 from the free throw line. Mayo was next with 13 including going 4-of-4 at the line in the fourth quarter. Junior Taylor Pearson hit double-figures for the sixth time this season with 10 points and grabbed six rebounds. Pearson played a tough game, fighting for many loose balls to take possession, and hit the deck on several occasions. She came through with a lot of major hustle plays, including two steals in the second half. Redshirt senior Khadaijia Brooks scored 10 points and had three boards. Brooks moves her consecutive games streak to 71-straight with at least one rebound.
Senior Ashley Sainitgene blocked three more shots bringing her season tally to 27 and 108 in her career. She also scored six points and pulled in six boards.
The game was a back-and-forth battle from the start. The teams traded baskets, and turnovers in the first quarter. The Sycamores took the lead, 13-12, with 2:13 remaining in the period. Indiana State pulled out to a four-point lead, but Marshall closed it back to a two-point deficit on a three from Brooks with 17 seconds left in the first. The Herd trailed at the end of the first 19-17.
Marshall immediately took back the lead in the second on a three from Wheeler, 20-19. The Sycamores briefly took back the lead before the Herd held the advantage for the rest of the quarter. Marshall led by as much as six, 29-23, before Indiana State rolled off a 6-0 run to tie the game with 1:13 left before halftime. The Herd scored the final four points of the period on a jumper by Pearson and two free throws from Wheeler. Marshall went into the halftime break leading 33-29.
The teams traded baskets in the third quarter as the Herd outscored ISU 15-14 in the period. Pearson hit a free throw to give Marshall a five-point lead going into the fourth quarter, 48-43.
The Herd jumped up to a nine-point advantage at the 8:28 mark in the fourth on a jumper in the paint from junior Dazha Congleton who finished with eight points. Indiana State then went on a 12-2 run to take its first lead since early in the second quarter, 57-56. Mayo then took control with a layup at 4:06 to give the Herd back a one-point lead. Mayo then buried her only three of the game less than a minute later from the far corner to put the lead back to four, and sparked Marshall's 16-3 run to finish the game. Mayo scored the last points on a layup with 22 seconds to go.
