HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's basketball team fell in a hard-fought game, 82-69, to the Bowling Green Falcons, Saturday in the Cam Henderson Center. Junior Kristen Mayo scored a career-high 21 points.

The Thundering Herd drops to 5-4 overall and the Falcons improve to 5-3.

"Bowling Green played really well," Herd head coach Tony Kemper said. "I'm not sure that we did a lot to counter the things they did well. The post player (Angela Perry) who we knew was good, was really good. We didn't make things hard for her.

"Offensively our executing was fine. Turnovers were down as they should be. We should be a good ball-handling team. We didn't make enough shots. When you get a chance to make one, they go 10-of-19 (from three) we go 13-of-38 (from three) and I thought we had really good shots. That's the difference in the game. They were just a little bit crisper then we were."

Mayo came through with the hot hand in the second and third quarters as Marshall battled to keep things close. The junior guard scored 10 points in the second and eight more in the third. Mayo finished 8-of-14 from the floor and 5-of-10 from outside. Redshirt senior Khadaijia Brooks tallied her first double-double of the season with 15 points, including 3-for-3 from three-point range, and a season-high 11 rebounds. Brooks has now grabbed at least one board in 72-straight games, 43rd career-game with five or more and 14th career game with 10 or more.

Freshman Savannah Wheeler ended the game with 11 points and led the team with seven assists. Junior Dazha Congleton tied her season-high with nine points. Senior Ashley Saintigene recorded three more blocks, all in the first half. Saintigene brings her season total up to 30 and has tallied three or more swats in eight of Marshall's nine games. It was also her 31st career game with two or more rejections.

Marshall struggled at the beginning of the game and eventually trailed the Falcons by 12, 20-8, with 3:02 remaining in the first. Brooks ended the Bowling Green 5-0 run with a 5-0 run of her own. Brooks started with a jumper at 1:59 and then followed up with a three just 26 seconds later. The Herd defense kept the Falcons from scoring any more points in the period and Wheeler added two more points on a layup just before the buzzer. The Herd trailed by five, 20-15.

The Herd fell behind by nine at the 5:47 mark of the second quarter, and then Mayo took over. The Grayson, Ky., native scored five-straight points and cut the deficit to four at 4:32. Mayo delivered an assist to junior Taylor Pearson who hit a three to then cut the lead down to three with 3:25 left in the half. Mayo then hit her second three of the quarter to tie the game at 31-31 with under three minutes to go before the break. Bowling Green answered with a three to keep the lead, but then Brooks came back with a three as well to tie things up again at 34-34. The Falcons then went inside to Angela Perry, who finished with a game-high 25 points, as Bowling Green ended the half with a 7-0 run and led 43-36.

Marshall fought to keep it close at the beginning of the third quarter, but the Falcons were able to pull the lead up to double digits with under four minutes to go in the period. Another three from Mayo cut the deficit back under 10 with 52 seconds left. A free throw by Bowling Green closed out the scoring in the third quarter and Marshall trailed 61-52. The Herd struggled shooting 6-of-18 from the floor and 3-of-11 from three in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter the Herd again battled and cut the deficit to four, 67-63, on another three from Mayo with 5:25 to go. However, the Falcons regained control with a 10-0 run over four-plus minutes. Two made free throws from Brooks with 1:13 remaining ended the Bowling Green run. A layup from Wheeler with 31 second left were the final points of the day for Marshall.

The Herd will head back out on the road after final's week for a contest at Rutgers on Sunday, Dec. 15. Marshall then travels to Towson (Dec. 21) for its final non-conference game of the 2019-20 season.
