PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Marshall women's basketball team fell on the road, 66-41, to the (RV) Rutgers Scarlet Knights, Sunday from the Rutgers Athletic Center. Freshman Savannah Wheeler led the Herd with 15 points.

The Thundering Herd is now 5-5 while the Scarlet Knights improve to 10-1.

"Obviously tough day offensively in terms of making shots," Herd head coach Tony Kemper said. "I thought early in the game we handled their pressure well and handled it throughout the game. We didn't turn it over against the press and we only had 11 turnovers. We knew we had to do that going in. I think when we go back and watch film, we will probably see some shots, especially early in the game before it got out of hand that were actually really good shots. We just have to find a way to step up and stick those."

Wheeler scored all of her points in the second half including 10 in the fourth quarter. Freshman Paige Shy and junior Kristen Mayo both chipped in six points. Redshirt senior Khadaijia Brooks finished with two rebounds and moved her streak to 73-straight games with at least one board. Senior Ashley Saintigene tallied two more blocks, both in the first half, and increases her career total to 113 with 32 this season. Senior Princess Clemons led the Herd with seven rebounds and three assists while scoring four points.

Marshall found itself in a deep hole in the first quarter as Rutgers began the game with a 15-0 run. The Herd finally got on the board on a layup by junior Taylor Pearson with 4:06 left in the period. The Scarlet Knights led 24-2 at the end of the first.

The Herd played much better throughout the rest of the game in comparison to Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights outscored Marshall by just four points in the second, 15-11, and went in at the half up 39-13.

The Marshall defense continued to improve holding Rutgers to just 14 points in the third as the Herd scored 11 more. Marshall's deficit was 29 as the Scarlet Knights led 53-24.

The Herd outscored Rutgers in the fourth quarter 17-13 as Wheeler was 3-of-5 from the floor and 3-4 from the line. Marshall's defense continued to keep up the pressure and the fight forcing four turnovers in the final quarter with sophomore Kia Sivils coming up with two steals.

Marshall finishes non-conference action on Saturday, Dec. 21, at Towson. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. The Herd will then head out on the road after the break to begin Conference USA play at Rice on Jan. 2.
