Last Time Out
Rice's tandem of 6-9 Nancy Mulkey and guard Erica Ogwumike combined for 46 of the Owls' 79 points and the visitors shot 68.1 percent from the field to down Marshall 79-67 Saturday afternoon in the Cam Henderson Center in Conference USA Women's Basketball action.
Rice improved to 20-3 overall and stayed unbeaten at 11-0 in conference play. Marshall dropped to 14-10 and 8-3 in defeat.
Mulkey made 12 of her 14 field goal attempts to go with seven rebounds and five blocked shots to rack up 25 points. Ogwumike registered a double-double in the form of 21 points (8-for-13) and 10 rebounds, while Sydne Wiggins (15) and Lauren Grigsby (10) also posted double-digit scoring efforts. Wiggins, who made four of her five long-range attempts, had a game-high five assists against no turnovers.
Marshall got 50 of its points from seniors Shayna Gore (31) and Taylor Porter (19), who made seven of 10 shots from the field, including five of six from deep. Princess Clemons added a team-high four rebounds and Kristen Mayo notched three assists.
The Owls held a big advantage in the paint, outscoring the home team 48-16. Marshall, who committed just five turnovers, led 10-4 in points off those miscues.
Rice jumped out to a nine-point (46-37) halftime lead on the strength of a blistering 78.3 percent clip (18-for-23) from the field. The lead grew to as many as 16 (56-40) on a three-point play by Ogwumike three minutes into the third stanza, but Marshall jumped right back into the game with a 21-5 run over the rest of the quarter to pull to within two (63-61) on a Porter triple near the end of the period.
The Herd got the margin back to two (67-65) on a 3-pointer by Taylor Pearson at the 6:35 mark of the final quarter, but managed just two Gore free throws the rest of the way. In total, Marshall made just one of its 10 fourth-quarter shots (1-for-6 from 3-point range), while Rice connected on eight of its 11 shots.
"We deserve a lot of credit for not backing down," said Marshall head coach Tony Kemper. "Are we ready for 'primetime' yet? No. We are in our fight, but not in the number of mistakes that it takes to beat a team that is so well constructed. They ran the shot clock down and basically made a basket at the end of every trip. They get a ton of credit for being a great team, because they are."
"We were ready to fight. What we tried to do made a lot of sense. We went after them in the only fashion we could, which was to make Mulkey, who was fantastic, guard us on the perimeter. For the most part, that was right but we just couldn't get enough stops."
The Thundering Herd's 13 made 3-pointers tied its C-USA high, which was set at FIU on January 19.
Gore, who scored in double-digits for the 19th-straight game and registered her fifth career 30+ point scoring game, also tallied two steals to move to seventh on the school's all-time list with 187. Her 31 points gave her 1,914 for her career, bumping her to ninth on the league's all-time ranking. Next up is Jamierra Faulkner of Southern Miss (2,022), who sits eighth.
Porter's five triples gave her 116 for her career and slotted her into eighth all-time, one behind AJ Johnson (2013-15).
