Blazers Use Huge Fourth Quarter to Beat Marshall

2/14/2019 9:30:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Clemons scores career-high 14

BIRMINGHAM, Al. – UAB scored 25 of the fourth quarter's 33 points and Angela Vendrell had a double-double effort of 13 rebounds and 11 assists as the Blazers knocked off visiting Marshall 77-59 Thursday evening at Bartow Arena.

The Blazers improved to 20-5 and 8-4 in Conference USA, while the Thundering Herd had its four-game road conference winning streak snapped at four and dipped to 14-11 and 8-4.

Rachael Childress (21) and Deanna Kuzmanic (20) combined for 41 points and Childress knocked down five of her six 3-point attempts. In her last three games against Marshall, Childress has made 19 of her 27 triples (70.4 percent). Imani Johnson (15) and Katelynn Thomas (14) did a lot of damage on the inside for the home team, outside of Johnson's lone long-range connection.

Marshall was powered by a career-high 14 points from Princess Clemons, who also tallied six rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench. Shayna Gore added 12 and Khadaijia Brooks contributed 11 on 4-for-7 shooting.

Marshall led by as many as eight on a Gore 3-pointer from the top of the key that gave the Herd a 31-23 lead with 4:34 left in the second quarter. UAB rallied, though, and ran off a 15-2 run to take a five-point (38-33) lead into the halftime break.

The Herd got down by nine in the third quarter, but battled back to take a one-point advantage (51-50) on two Brooks free throws with 1:01 left.

Marshall trailed by one as the fourth quarter began but made just two of its 12 shots in the period as UAB gradually pulled away.

"We just didn't play well enough and we didn't play well enough together," said Marshall head coach Tony Kemper. "We're just struggling right now, defensively, particularly against those who have good offenses."

The Thundering Herd will take on Middle Tennessee Saturday evening (6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT) in the Murphy Center in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The Blue Raiders improved to 19-6 and 10-2 in league play after knocking off WKU by the score of 81-68 on Thursday.
