Burch hit first career home run

Box Score (PDF)

CONWAY, S.C. – The Marshall softball team lost 3-2 to the Towson Tigers in the final game of the Battle at the Beach, hosted by Coastal Carolina.

The Thundering Herd is now 7-3 overall.

"I'm disappointed in our performance today," Herd head coach Megan Smith said. "We just weren't very sharp in all aspects of the game. We showed some heart and grit at the end, but throughout the game we weren't really locked in.

"We have to get back to Huntington and get back to work so that we are ready for next weekend."

Marshall managed just four hits while the Tigers recorded nine. Senior Abigail Tolbert got the start and pitched the first four innings, allowed three runs off six hits. Junior Kailee Williamson came on in relief in the fifth and tossed the final three innings. Williamson struck out two and allowed three hits.

The Herd trailed early as Towson scored two runs in the second and picked up one more in the fourth.

Marshall's defense got out of a major jam in the fifth as Towson loaded the bases with no outs. A grounder back to Williamson in the circle started a 1-2-3 double play as senior catcher Hayden Ellis turned the throw to sophomore Aly Harrell at first. A fly out to freshman Mya Stevenson in right ended the inning.

Junior Blakely Burch got Marshall on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth with her first career home run. Freshman Mya Stevenson started off the inning with a base hit and then senior Abigail Estrada came in to pinch run before Burch went deep to left center.

The Herd had another opportunity in the bottom of seventh. Freshman Caitlin Myers entered the game to pinch hit and drew a walk after a long at-bat battle. Fellow freshman Rachel Pennington was then brought in to pinch run at first. Two batters later, Harrell was hit by a pitch for the second time and senior Samantha Loose came in to run for Harrell. The Herd had two runners on with two outs but could not get the timely hit.

Marshall hits the road for its third-straight early season tournament, Feb. 22-24, at the Holy City Showdown in Charleston, S.C. The tournament is co-hosted by College of Charleston and Charleston Southern. The Herd will take on UMass-Lowell, Iowa State, UNC-Wilmington, Charleston Southern and Appalachian State.
