Â
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Freshman Mya Stevenson came up clutch with a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth for the win in game one, 4-3, over the UMass-Lowell Riverhawks. Marshall fell in the second game, 1-0, to the Iowa State Cyclones Friday afternoon at the Holy City Showdown.
Â
The Thundering Herd is now 8-4.
Â
"Pitching and defense were stellar today," Herd head coach Megan Smith said. "Both (Abigail) Tolbert and KK (Kailee Williamson) threw extremely well and our defense came up with some great plays in two tight games.
Â
"Offensively, it was not a great day for us but Mya stepped up big for us in the first game for the win. But we have to make some adjustments on offense to be successful tomorrow."
Â
Game One: Marshall 4, UMass-Lowell 3 (8 innings)
Marshall trailed 1-0 through most of the game until senior Briana Daiss came through with a 2-RBI double that scored freshmen Chloe Lee and Rachel Pennington in the bottom of the sixth.
Â
Junior Kailee Williamson got the start in the circle for Marshall and pitched the first six innings. Williamson allowed six hits, one run and struck out six. Senior Abigail Tolbert came on in relief to start the seventh inning.
Â
The Riverhawks tied the game in the top of the seventh with a solo home run and then held on defensively in the bottom of the inning, despite a one-out base hit from Katie Adams.
Â
In the top of the eighth, with the International tie-breaker rule in effect, UMass-Lowell was able to push the runner across the plate to take a 3-2 lead.
Â
Sophomore Armani Brown was the runner placed out at second for the Herd (International tie-breaker rule). With one out and Brown still at second, Stevenson drilled a home run to center for the walk-off. It was Stevenson's third homer of the year and her first collegiate walk-off.
Â
Tolbert was credited with her fifth win of the season.
Â
Game Two: Iowa State 1, Marshall 0
It was a pitching and defensive duel in the Herd's second game of the doubleheader. Savannah Sanders for Iowa State and Tolbert for Marshall both pitched one hitters.
Â
The Cyclones took a 1-0 lead in the first and held on throughout the rest of the contest. The only hit allowed by Tolbert came in the first inning and then shut down Iowa State through the remainder of the game.
Â
Marshall struggled on the offensive side and recorded its first hit in the top of the fifth as senior Hayden Ellis hit her third double of the year to left-center.
Â
The Herd had a chance in the top of the seventh as junior Sierra Huerta led off the inning with a walk but Marshall could not find the timely hit.
Â
Marshall's defense continued to make great plays throughout both games. Junior Blakely Burch started a double play in the first game and senior Hannah Giammarino caught a deep fly ball in the center before crashing into the fence that ended the bottom of the sixth.
Â
"The first weekend our defense struggled a little bit so it has been better and better," coach Smith said. "It gives our pitchers more confidence so it has been good to see the improvement. Hannah always plays all out every single play so I wouldn't expect anything less from her out there."
Â
Marshall continues the Holy City Showdown on Saturday against UNC-Wilmington (12:15 p.m.) and Charleston Southern (4:45 p.m.) at Charleston Southern's field.
