CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Marshall softball team brought the bats out to play in Saturday's action at the Holy City Showdown, played at Charleston Southern. The Thundering Herd defeated the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks, 11-5, and then took down the Charleston Southern Buccaneers, 10-0, in five innings.

Marshall improves to 10-4. It was the first time that Marshall scored 10 or more runs in two games in the same day since March 7, 2015 down at FIU. The Herd defeated the Panthers 13-5 in five innings in the first game and then 13-3 in the second contest.

"Our offense bounced back from yesterday and I thought as a full team lineup that we were dominant today," Herd head coach Megan Smith said. "KK (Kailee Williamson) was brilliant in game two. I thought she threw lights out, showed a lot of poise and fire out there in the circle. And our defense was stellar again today. No errors so far for the weekend.

"Today was a good day for the Herd and we are looking to come out tomorrow and do the same against Appalachian State."

Game One: Marshall 11, UNC-Wilmington 5
There were plenty of fireworks in the first game of the day as the Herd and the Seahawks combined for seven home runs. Marshall was able to piece together more hits, 10 to six, in coming away with the win.

The Herd belted three homers as freshman Mya Stevenson, sophomore Aly Harrell and senior Hannah Giammarino all went deep.

Marshall started the scoring in the top of the first as sophomore Katie Adams drove in junior Sierra Huerta with a double to right-center. UNCW tied the game in the bottom of the first with a solo home run, its first of the day.

The Herd pounded out five more runs in the second. Giammarino got it started with a one-out single to left. Senior Hayden Ellis reached base safely on a fielder's choice that Giammarino beat the throw to second. Senior Abigail Estrada legged out an infield single to load the bases. Huerta drove in the first run with a bases loaded walk. Harrell plated Ellis from third on a ground out to second. With two runners on and two outs, Stevenson crushed a pitch to right field for her fourth home run of the season. Marshall led 6-1.

Harrell added her fourth home run of the season, 15th of her career, in the fourth inning with a solo shot to left that gave Marshall a 6-run lead, 7-1.

The Seahawks hit another solo home run in the fifth to cut the Herd lead back to five. However, Giammarino put the advantage back to six with a solo home run to left-center in the top of the sixth. It was her third of the season.

UNCW scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back home runs. First a two-run shot, followed by a solo homer. Junior Kailee Williamson entered the game in the sixth for the starter, senior Abigail Tolbert, and allowed the second home run on the first pitch. After allowing a walk right after the homer, Williamson responded with three-straight strikeouts to end the inning.

Knowing that the Seahawks can score runs in bunches, the Herd stayed with its foot on the gas in the top of the seventh. Stevenson led off with a single to right-center and then freshman Rachel Pennington came in to run at first. Freshman Chloe Lee then reached on an infield single and senior Briana Daiss was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Two batters later, Giammarino drove in two more runs with a single to right. With senior Samantha Loose at third, who reached on a fielder's choice, Ellis dropped down a perfectly executed squeeze play and Loose scored for the final run of the inning. Marshall now led, 11-5.

Williamson recorded her fourth-straight strikeout and then the defense made the plays to get out of the inning and record the win. Stevenson and Giammarino finished the game with three RBI each.

Tolbert earned her sixth win of the season as Marshall was leading 8-4 when Williamson came on in relief.

The defense made some great plays as it was also the third-straight game for the Herd without an error. Stevenson had a diving catch in the third. Another highlight came in the fourth as Daiss at third tossed to Loose at second for the first out, and then turned and threw to Harrell at first for the out and ended the inning.

Game Two: Marshall 10, Charleston Southern 0 (5 innings)
The offense did not run out of fire power, putting up 10 more runs on 10 hits in the nightcap win over the Buccaneers. Junior pitcher Kailee Williamson went the distance, allowed just one hit, and earned her third win of the year. All three wins for Williamson have come with 10 runs scored by the Herd offense with a 10-1 win at San Diego, 10-1 victory over Presbyterian and now the 10-0 decision over CSU.

Adams got the scoring started again for the Herd with an RBI single in the top of the first that allowed Stevenson to score.

Marshall cranked out seven more runs in the second to take a commanding 8-0 lead. Loose led off the inning with a walk and Giammarino followed up with a single to center. Ellis dropped down a bunt for a single and loaded the bases. Lee legged out an infield single that scored Loose. Huerta then drove a fly ball to left that was deep enough for Giammarino to tag up and come home.

Harrell kept the inning going with a 2-run double to left-center that scored Ellis and Lee. Two batters later, with two outs, Adams ripped a single to right that plated Harrell. Just when you thought the scoring was over, Daiss blasted a 2-run shot to left for her second home run of the season and gave Marshall the 8-run lead. Daiss is now ninth all-time at Marshall with 22 career home runs and became the 11th player in program history with 100 RBI.

The Herd added one more run in the fourth as Daiss came home on a ground out to short by Giammarino. The final run of the day crossed the plate in the fifth as Lee scored on a single from Huerta.

Williamson finished off the game with her fifth strikeout of the night.

Marshall finishes the Holy City Showdown on Sunday against Appalachian State with a 1:30 p.m. ET, scheduled start time.
