PINEHURST, N.C. – The Marshall men's golf team improved again in the final round of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate. The Herd ended the first round in ninth, then moved to seventh after the second round, and jumped to fifth to end the weekend on Sunday afternoon.
The Thundering Herd recorded the third best team score of the day with a 294 to help move ahead of Belmont and Eastern Kentucky.
"Another challenging day and I am really excited for the guys," Herd head coach Matt Grobe said. "They played really well today in very challenging conditions. They have worked really hard this year and it is good to see them get rewarded for their hard work. We still have work to do but I really like the improvements we are seeing."
Junior Cole Moore was the top finisher for Marshall, tied for 14th overall. Redshirt sophomore Will Straub moved up 13 places on the leaderboard with a 4-stroke improvement after scoring a 2-over 73, and finishing tied for 28th. Redshirt junior Ben Roeder also made a big jump with a 7-stoke improvement from the day before and climbed 20 spots up the leaderboard.
Redshirt senior Thomas Frazier was playing as an individual and raised his name on the leaderboard up 15 spots to finish tied for 18th after a 7-stroke improvement as well.
Davidson made a clean sweep in the trophies at Pinehurst. The Wildcats won the team competition by 29-shots over runner-up Radford. Clayton Tribus of Davidson took home the top player award with a 3-under 210 and teammate Viraj Garewall came in second with an even-par 213.
