GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Marshall men's golf team completed round one Friday at the Furman Intercollegiate.
"Today was a really up and down day for us," Herd head coach Matt Grobe said. "I saw a lot of good things and we made a couple of mistakes as well. We really played better today than our score showed. Hopefully we can get a few more putts to drop tomorrow. I really think we are hitting the ball well, but we need to convert more birdies."
The Herd sits in 13th out of 21 teams. Leading the Herd after the first round are Cole Moore, Cameron Root and Ben Roeder, all tied for 52nd. Freshman Kyle Mitchell, who is playing as an individual, finished just one stroke ahead of his teammates and is tied for 41st.
Virginia Tech leads the team competition with a team score of 3-under 281. Coastal Carolina is just one stroke back and Davidson is two strokes off the lead. Four players are tied at the top of the leaderboard after scoring a 2-under 69. Zack Taylor and Wes Artac of Coastal Carolina, Alex Ross of Davidson and James Turner for Dartmouth are all tied for first.
Marshall begins the second round on Saturday in the afternoon session as the Herd will not tee off until 1:10 p.m.
