Thundering Herd women tip at 6:30 p.m.

BOONE, N.C. – The Marshall women's basketball team returns to action when it faces Appalachian State at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Holmes Convocation Center in Boone, North Carolina for the quarterfinal round of the Women's Basketball Invitational.

The Thundering Herd enters the game with a record of 17-14. The Mountaineers are 19-14.

The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and will also be carried on WMUL's (88.1 FM) Cutting Edge Sports Radio Network where it can be accessed through one of the Listen Live links at www.marshall.edu/wmul.

Tourney Time
Monday's game at Appalachian State is Marshall's fourth contest in the WBI. The Thundering Herd participated in the 2015 WBI and won at Northern Kentucky 81-79 in the first round before getting edged at Mercer by a 73-71 score in the second. Last week, the Thundering Herd won at Davidson 67-64.

Watching the Calendar
Marshall's March 25 game at Appalachian State ties the latest the program has played in any season since it competed through that same date in 1971 in the National Invitational Women's Tournament. The team went 13-4 that season.

Climbing the Charts
Shayna Gore's 96 3-pointers are a new single-season school record, breaking her mark of 86 from last season. Taylor Porter currently has 63 and that total is good for seventh. The program's top seven single-season totals are below:

1. 96, Shayna Gore (2018-19)
2. 86, Shayna Gore (2017-18)
3. 72, AJ Johnson (2014-15)
4. 70, Shayna Gore (2016-17)
5. 69, Shay Weaver (2012-13)
6. 68, Kizzy Hart (2007-08)
7. 63, Taylor Porter (2018-19)

Gore's total is also eighth in Conference USA history for a single season.

Last Time Out
The Marshall women's basketball team led for more than 35 minutes over host Davidson and held on for a 67-64 win in first-round action of the Women's Basketball Invitational Wednesday evening at John M. Belk Arena.

Shayna Gore led all scorers with 19 points was one of four Thundering Herd players in double figures. Khadaijia Brooks made six of her seven shots, including all three long-range attempts, to finish with 15. Taylor Porter and Taylor Pearson posted 11 apiece, the latter narrowly missing her second-straight double-double with nine rebounds.

Cassidy Gould had 16 points to lead the Wildcats, while Kianna Speight had 14 and Justine Lyon recorded 11. Lyon, though, was held to a 4-for-15 shooting effort from the field, including an 0-6 shooting from deep. Sarah Donovan had a game-high 15 rebounds and Katie Turner added six assists and three steals.

Marshall led 39-32 at the half and built a 12-point lead (44-32) on a Pearson layup with 7:36 left in the third quarter.

Davidson, however, finished the quarter on an 18-5 run to close to within one (50-49) and the game headed to the final period.

The Thundering Herd trailed by one (64-63) with 37 seconds left before Pearson faked a handoff to point guard Kristen Mayo and rolled to the basket for the go-ahead layup. On the ensuing possession, Davidson's Lyon got an offensive rebound but was called for a travelling violation on her putback attempt. Mayo then went to the free throw line and made one of two to give Marshall a two-point lead with 15 seconds left.

On the next trip down the floor, Turner missed a triple and Pearson grabbed the weakside board and was quickly fouled. She then made one of two and the Thundering Herd led by three at 67-64. Davidson had one final look to send the contest to overtime, but Lyon saw her 35-foot 3-pointer rim out as time expired.

"To go on the road and get a postseason win, in any tournament, is really hard," said Marshall head coach Tony Kemper. "Our interior defense was really good and they found it difficult to score in there. Give Davidson credit. They had good lateral movement, but we held off their runs and made big shots when we needed them. It was just enough to keep them from getting over the top."

The Wildcats won the overall rebounding battle 49-32, including 21 to six on the offensive end. However, the Thundering Herd owned the edge on points in the paint (30-20) and points off turnovers (13-6).

Career-Highs
Taylor Pearson tied a career-high with five field goals in the 67-64 win at Davidson.

34.6
Shayna Gore is currently averaging a team-high 34.6 minutes per game. The last time a Thundering Herd player logged more for an entire season was Chantelle Handy's 36.6 during the 2008-09 season.

Marshall's Shayna Gore is in lofty company when you compare her numbers to Conference USA's all-time records. She is currently fifth in league history in 3-pointers with 303 and seventh in scoring with 2,064 career points.

Porter Named Conference USA's Player of the Week
Marshall senior Taylor Porter was named Conference USA's Player of the Week for the second time this season after her career day in the Thundering Herd's 87-42 win over FIU in the regular season finale.

The Louisa, Kentucky native shattered Marshall's single-game 3-point record with 10 drilled in 12 attempts on Senior Night. She made 10-straight and came just one short of tying the C-USA mark, while fueling a Thundering Herd offense that broke Marshall's single-game triples mark (18) en route to a program-best 10 league wins. Porter amassed a career-high 30 points, seven rebounds, three assists and a steal in her 30 minutes. Marshall's victory secured the six seed in the Conference USA Tournament.

Up Next
The winner of Monday's game will face the winner of Tennessee Tech and Campbell in the WBI Semifinals.
