Herd with three matches leading to the finals
Spring Schedule
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall men's soccer team has kicked off its 2019 spring exhibition season. The Herd will be playing in the inaugural Crew SC Spring College League.
The Herd already took on the University of Charleston at the Shawnee Sports Complex this past Saturday, March 2, and played to a 2-2 draw.
"I thought it was a decent match for us in the end," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "We started off very slowly, and it took us 20-25 minutes to wake up and realize that we were in an actual match. After we raised our intensity, and figured a few things out, we were able to get comfortably on top of the game, and score a couple of goals.
"From a sloppy start from us and an excellent start for UC, we were able to find our shape and start to dominate possession and scoring opportunities. It was a good test for us, and we were able to use the experience to prepare us for the inaugural Crew SC Spring College league."
Marshall is one of eight schools playing in the Crew SC Spring College League. The other teams are Cleveland State, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Ohio State, Dayton, Fort Wayne and Northern Kentucky.
"It's fantastic to be able to play meaningful matches in the spring," coach Grassie said. "Both our student athletes and our coaches desire meaningful, competitive matches in the spring, so this competition will take us a step in that direction. We will play for a trophy, so hopefully that can add some realism to these matches so we can see how we perform under the pressure that can bring.
"So far, the guys are training well, and you can tell there is something different about their sharpness compared to previous spring seasons."
The Herd will play at Cincinnati on March 16, and then play at home against Ohio State (March 23) and Northern Kentucky (April 6). The finals are set for April 14 in Columbus, Ohio.
"We have a good group of opponents to get through before the finals on April 14th," coach Grassie added. "We will play Cincinnati away, and host both NKU and Ohio State at Hoops Family Field. It should be an excellent competition, and we hope we can give our soccer community something to get excited about this spring."
Marshall finished the 2018 season with an overall record of 8-9-3 and advanced to the semi-final round of the Conference USA Tournament for the second-consecutive season. The Herd was eliminated by No. 1 seed, and third-ranked team in the country, Kentucky, 2-1.
