HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall tennis' play in the Conference USA Championship begins Thursday afternoon when the Thundering Herd takes on the Charlotte 49ers in a first round match at 4 p.m.

Sophomore Anna Smith was named to the 2019 InTouch Credit Union Conference USA Women's Tennis All-Academic Team Tuesday, marking the fourth straight season the Herd has placed someone on the C-USA All-Academic Team.

Marshall is seeded 11th in this year's Conference USA Championship. That seed marks a two-seed improvement from 2018, when the Herd was seeded 13th and eliminated in the first round.

Marshall has five players with at least eight singles wins this spring (Anna Smith 12, Madi Ballow 11, Daniela Dankanych 8, Liz Stefancic 8, Victoria Walter 8).

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT: CHARLOTTE
Charlotte enters the conference tournament on a 10-match win streak. The 49ers are 18-6 this season and 3-2 in Conference USA matches.

Pierina Imparato leads the 49ers with an 18-2 singles record, playing primarily at the No. 4 spot. Rocio Safont is 17-3 in singles play for Charlotte.

Imparato and Sasha Lee are 17-3 in doubles play, including a 15-2 mark at the No. 3 spot. Safont and Emma Scott are 14-5 at the No. 2 spot.

SERIES HISTORY
Marshall and Charlotte have already met once this season, with the 49ers coming out on top over the Herd in Huntington back in February. Marshall has a 9-2 lead in the all-time series.

If Marshall wins, the Herd will face either (3) Florida Atlantic or (14) Western Kentucky in the quarterfinals. If Marshall loses, its season is over.
