Thundering Herd wins all matches in straight sets
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall's final home tennis match of the 2019 season was also its shortest of the season, as the Thundering Herd downed the University of Charleston Tuesday afternoon, 7-0, in 95 minutes.
"It was great to have the University of Charleston come down and play," head coach John Mercer said. "It was also nice to see all of our boosters and supporters out here for our last home match of the season on a beautiful day."
Marshall quickly took command of the match with convincing wins at the top two doubles spots to claim the first point. Anna Smith and Daniela Dankanych won over Katie Swann and Kristine Gegeshidze, 6-1, while Liz Stefancic and Madi Ballow defeated Elise Edwards and Meggan William, 6-0. Victoria Walter and Matilde Mulatero were leading in their match against Regina Saucedo and Mathilde Simon, 3-2, but the match went unfinished after the Herd clinched the doubles point.
The Herd carried its momemtum from doubles play into the singles portion of the contest, taking all six singles matches in straight sets. Ballow opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Saucedo. Stefancic defeated Swann, 6-0, 6-4, while Dankanych defeated Edwards, 6-1, 6-1, to clinch the match for the Herd. Victoria Walter downed Simon, 6-1, 6-1, while Smith battled to defeat Gegeshidze, 6-2, 6-4. Mulatero won the last match over William, 6-2, 6-2.
"I really appreciate having the University of Charleston come down during the middle of their conference season to play," Mercer said. "I wish them the best of luck in their upcoming conference tournament and am sure they'll do great.
"As a team, we're looking forward to getting back on the road and competing in some tough matches this week."
