Softball Drops Game One of NISC to George Washington

Herd to play in elimination game Friday at 1 p.m.

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Marshall softball team lost 4-1 to George Washington on Thursday in the first round of the National Invitational Softball Championship. The Herd will now play in an elimination game, Friday at 1 p.m., against the loser of Liberty and Rutgers.

The Thundering Herd fell to 39-21 and the Colonials improved to 43-16.

Senior Briana Daiss was 2-of-3 in the game with two doubles, it was her first career two-double game. Sophomore Aly Harrell also recorded two hits, both singles. Junior Sierra Huerta drove in Marshall's only run with a double to left-center that scored Harrell. Huerta was also hit by a pitch for the 30th time this season, adding to her NCAA leading total, and on the defensive side she tied a career-high with six assists.

Senior pitcher Abigail Tolbert went the distance for her 26th complete game of the year. She allowed 10 hits, four runs, three earned and struck out six.

The game was a pitching and defensive battle until George Washington put up four runs on six hits and one Herd error in the top of the fifth. Marshall's lone run came in the sixth when Huerta plated Harrell.

The Herd recorded six hits, drew two walks and the one hit-by-pitch.
