Full 2019 Schedule

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.  – Marshall men's soccer head coach Chris Grassie announced the 2019 schedule for the Thundering Herd. Marshall is set to play eight regular season matches at Hoops Family Field.

"This year's schedule is very competitive," coach Grassie said entering his third season at the helm. "If we do well, it gives us a great chance of getting into the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history."

Marshall is looking to build off an 8-9-3 finish that saw the Herd reach the Conference USA Tournament as the No. 5 seed and advance to the semifinals for the second-consecutive time under coach Grassie.

The Herd begins the 2019 season with two exhibition matches. The first will be a home contest against WVU Tech on Aug. 18 at 7:30 p.m. Marshall then hits the road for a final exhibition match at UNC Asheville on Aug. 23.

The beginning of the regular season puts the Herd on the road for the first two contests at Fort Wayne (Aug. 30) and at Northern Kentucky (Sept. 2) before returning to Hoops Family Field for a stretch of 7-of-8 matches at home.

"We have an amazing home stretch at the beginning of the season that will see us play seven matches here through September and the first week of October," coach Grassie said. "We have some big teams visiting us, but hopefully, with the help of our amazing student support section, we can make Veteran's memorial a fortress in 2019.

"If we can do that, we should be in a great position to go into the business end of the season."

Marshall begins the home-stretch against Butler (Sept. 6), a team that won the Big East in 2016 and 2017. The Herd will then face East Tennessee State (Sept. 10) before its first Conference USA match of the year against South Carolina (Sept. 14). The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) comes to Huntington for the first ever meeting between the two programs. The Vaqueros won 14 games in 2018 and advanced the Western Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal. The Herd then takes on a familiar foe, the Akron Zips on Sept. 21. The Zips won 15 matches in 2018 and advanced to the 2018 National Championship before falling 1-0 to Maryland. Akron has participated in the College Cup three out of the last four seasons and were National Champions in 2010.

The Herd hits the road to Old Dominion (Sept. 27), the site of the 2019 Conference USA Tournament, before coming back home for two more matches against Dayton (Oct. 1) and another C-USA match with UAB. The Dayton Flyers won nine games in 2018 and also advanced to the conference semifinal, just three seasons removed from winning the Atlantic 10.
Following the match with the Blazers, Marshall begins a long road journey that will see the Herd travel to five different states and cover over 4,200 miles.

"In the second half of our season, we will have to become road warriors," coach Grassie said. "We play six matches in a row on the road, and that will define our season. But we are looking no further ahead than our opening weekend trip.

"I wish it was August already!"

Marshall travels first to Charlotte (Oct. 12) before journeying to California to play Loyola Marymount (Oct. 15) and San Diego State (Oct. 18). The Herd then returns east to play a Wright State squad that went 13-3 in 2018 (Oct. 22), then down to Florida Atlantic (Oct. 26) and finally a match with Oakland University (Oct. 29).

Marshall comes back to Huntington for one final home match against the defending Conference USA Regular Season and Tournament Champions, the Kentucky Wildcats. Kentucky, who was ranked No. 3 in the country, was eliminated by Maryland in the Elite Eight.

The Herd then goes back out on the road for the regular season finale at FIU on Nov. 8.

The Conference USA Tournament, hosted by Old Dominion, takes place Nov. 13-17.
