Track, football star claim annual awards

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – As the 2019-20 school year is set to begin, Marshall Athletics closed the books on 2018-19 by naming Reneese Batson (track and field) and Tyre Brady (football) its Student-Athletes of the Year.

Batson won the gold medal in the hammer throw at the 2019 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a distance of 57.18 meters (187 feet, 7 inches). She also placed seventh in the meet in the discus (43.97 meters/144 feet, 3 inches) to help the program amass 58 team points at the league meet, its most since 2013. The Laurel, Maryland native was a mainstay in the top 10 of the hammer throw at every meet throughout the season, breaking her own school record with a toss of 58.84 meters (193 feet) at the WCU Invitational on March 22.

Brady was a first-team All-Conference USA selection and earned the team's Offensive Player of the Year honors at season's end. The native of Homestead, Florida, led the Herd in receptions and receiving yards in each of the last two seasons, and totaled 17 touchdowns in his two seasons with the program. He will forever be remembered for his breakout game at North Carolina State in 2017, an 11-catch, 248-yard performance. The receiving yards were the most by a player, home or visitor, in the history of Carter-Finley Stadium, and the yardage was the fourth most in MU history, the most by a Herd player on the road and the most by a Marshall player against an FBS program. Brady finished with seven career 100-yard games, and the last five times Brady eclipsed 100 yards all came in Marshall wins.

The duo will be honored for their accomplishments at a Marshall football game this fall.
