HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall men's golf team completed another great round on the final day of the 50th Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational on Tuesday at Guyan Golf & Country Club. The Herd ended up in sixth overall and 13 under par.
Marshall finished each round with a score under par at 5-under in round one and 4-under in both the second and third rounds.
"This was an exciting week for me as a coach," Herd head coach Matt Grobe said. "Our kids didn't play very well last year and they spent the summer working their tails off to get better. It really showed this week. We still have a long way to go to be where we want, but this week was a big step for us.
"Tyler Jones played great this week in his first collegiate event. Will Straub continued this fall where he finished last spring, playing really solid golf. Ben Roeder played great today and finished a strong week. Kyle Mitchell played really solid, consistent golf all three rounds after getting off to a rocky start.
"I saw a lot of good things from Matt (Hoffman), Cameron (Root), Cole (Moore) and Brad (Plaziak). This is going to be a fun year. We have great kids and they work hard."
Freshman Tyler Jones in his first collegiate tournament finished with a 6-under 207 (68, 69, 70) and tied for ninth. Redshirt junior Will Straub scored a 4-under 209 (69, 69, 71) and tied for 15th. Redshirt senior Ben Roeder improved by four shots from the second to the third round scoring a 3-under 68 on Tuesday. Roeder finished tied for 20th with a 2-under 211. Sophomore Kyle Mitchell scored a 1-under 212.
Redshirt junior Matt Hoffman, playing as an individual, finished with a 3-under 210 and tied for 17th. Redshirt junior Cameron Root also finished the tournament under par with a 1-under 212.
The battle for both the team and individual titles came down to the wire. A few players for VCU were able to score birdies and even an eagle in the remaining few holes to finish with a team score 31-under 821. The Dayton Flyers ended up just three shots back at 824 and 28-under for the three rounds.
Kyle Schmidt of Dayton claimed the top spot coming through with an 11-under 202. Schmidt finished just one stroke ahead of teammate Domenic Maricocchi and Ian Peng of VCU.
