CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Marshall men's golf team finished round one of the Golfweek Conference Challenge, Sunday afternoon from the Cedar Rapids Country Club.
The Thundering Herd sits in 16th place, but is just nine shots back of the top four in a closely packed field. Thirteen of the 16 teams are all within nine shots of one another.
"We played okay today," Herd head coach Matt Grobe said. "But okay golf doesn't work when you are playing in a field this strong. We made too many mistakes as a team. I made some mistakes with strategy and with green reading and the guys made some mistakes, missing in some places that we can't miss.
"We fought so hard to very end. Ben Roeder birdied three of his final four holes to post 72. I really liked a lot of the things that I saw out the other guys. I really feel good about this team and feel like we will play much better tomorrow."
Redshirt senior Ben Roeder was the top finisher of the day for the Herd with his even-par 72, and is tied for 19th. He ended his day on the front nine and birdied six, eight and nine to get back to even. Roeder finished the day with four total birdies. Including junior Brad Plaziak who is playing as an individual, Marshall's golfers tallied a total of 15 birdies in the round. Redshirt junior Matt Hoffman had four and redshirt junior Will Straub had three.
The Ball State Cardinals lead the team category after shooting a 9-under 279 on Sunday. Ball State has a four-stroke lead over Iowa heading into the second round. The Campbell Camels are in third at 4-under.
Zan Luka Stirn of Arkansas State leads the field after scoring a 6-under 66. He has a two-stroke lead on four players.
