Leon Named Conference USA Co-Defensive Player of the Week

First weekly award for the junior middle blocker
IRVING, Texas – Marshall volleyball junior middle blocker Destiny Leon was named Conference USA Co-Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. It is the first weekly award for Leon and the second for the Herd this season.

Leon was a force for Marshall as the Herd won the Billiken Invitational, Sept. 14-15, with a 2-1 record. During the three matches, Leon recorded 20 total blocks, including a career-high 10 total rejections in the sweep of the host school, the Saint Louis Billikens. On the offensive side she added 16 kills.

In the opening match against UT-Martin, Leon came through with four total blocks out of Marshall's 11. The match that opened everyone's eyes in St. Louis, was the sweep over the Billikens. The Herd recorded 12 total team blocks and the 6-3 junior had her hands in 83.3 percent. She recorded five of her blocks in the second set and had the kill on the final point as well. The Bon Air West Arouca, Trinidad, native added four more blocks in the third and final period.

Against Troy, Leon had a hand in six of the Herd's 14 total blocks. She added nine kills with a .400 hitting percentage.

In 2018, Leon's first with the Herd, she tallied just nine total blocks for the year. She surpassed that total in the fourth match this season at Georgetown, not to mention in the single match against Saint Louis. The junior has 42 total blocks in 2019 and has added 46 kills, another career-high, on the offensive side.

Leon makes it back-to-back weeks that a Herd player was honored by the conference as redshirt junior Ciara Debell was named co-offensive player of the week on Sept. 9.
