Marshall returns to pitch on Saturday versus Akron at Hoops Family Field

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros, 3-2, Tuesday night at Hoops Family Field.
The Thundering Herd is now 4-1-1 and the Vaqueros improve to 3-1.
"I thought our guys did a tremendous job at the beginning of the game," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "I am proud of their performance. Obviously, they were playing against a lot of adversity but our guys kept their heads and kept fighting until the very last minute. But there was a lot to be proud of for Thundering Herd soccer."
Marshall got on the scoreboard first as sophomore Vinicius Fernandes scored his first goal of the season in the 12th minute, heading in a pass from freshman Joao Souza. The Herd went in at the halftime break up, 1-0.
In the second half, the Vaqueros fired back with the equalizer just 20 seconds into the period. UTRGV scored two more times in the second half including a penalty kick in the 77th minute. Marshall was forced to play down a man as freshman Max Schneider was given his second yellow card in the 63rd minute.
The Herd continued to fight and freshman Bleno Cruz netted his first goal of the season with one second remaining on the clock.
Marshall returns to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m., as Akron comes to Huntington.
