HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall men's soccer team earned a 2-1 comeback victory over the Akron Zips, Saturday night at Hoops Family Field. Freshman Milo Yosef hit the game-winner in the 82nd minute.
The Thundering Herd is now 5-1-1. The Zips, who fell to Maryland 1-0 in the 2018 National Championship match and have been to the NCAA Tournament the past 12 seasons, fall to 0-6.
"Akron is one of the best teams in the country over the last 10-15 years," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "(Our play in the beginning) was a little bit slow but it was tactical with both teams not wanting to make any mistakes. It took us a little while to get going. They scored and we responded excellently I felt and we showed some real character tonight.
"It was a wonderful performance tonight from everyone who played. I thought it was a marquee win for our program in trying to be that NCAA Tournament team."
The match was a battle from the beginning with both teams fighting for position and control. Marshall outshot Akron 6-5 but the Zips had two shots on goal to Marshall's one. The teams went into the break scoreless.
The Zips scored first less than 10 minutes into the second half on a header right near the goal line. Almost 24 minutes went by before the Herd hit the equalizer. Akron was called for a foul inside the box as Yosef was taken down from behind trying to break through the defense. Sophomore Jan-Erik Leinhos lined up to take the penalty kick and knocked it right by the keeper to tie the match at 1-1. For Leinhos, it was his second goal of the year.
Both teams continued on the attack trying to break the tie, but Marshall was the one to push through. Yosef took a pass from junior Jamil Roberts and cut right through the defense and fired a shot over the keeper's outstretched hand into the top of the net to give the Herd the lead with 8:59 left on the clock. Yosef is now tied with junior Pedro Dolabella for the team lead with three goals.
Akron immediately began to rush the ball into its attacking zone to try and get the equalizer but the Herd defense was up to the challenge and cleared the ball back downfield to help take more time off the clock. When the horn sounded, the crowd of over 650 fans erupted with cheers.
Both teams finished the match with 11 total shots. Akron edged out the Herd in shots on goal 5-4. However, redshirt senior keeper Paulo Pita stoned the other four shots to help keep Marshall in the match.
Marshall gets back into Conference USA action on Friday, Sept. 27 at 8 p.m., on the road against the Old Dominion Monarchs.
