Thundering Herd just outside the Top 25 at 29th overall
NORFOLK, Va. – The Marshall men's soccer team after playing the past five matches at home, hits the road for a Conference USA match at the Old Dominion Monarchs Friday at 8 p.m. The Thundering Herd is receiving votes in the latest NCAA/United Soccer Coaches Poll and the squad sits just outside of the Top 25 at 29th overall.
Marshall enters the match 5-1-1 overall and 1-0-0 in Conference USA play. The Monarchs come in at 1-4-1 overall and 0-1-1 in conference.

Last Meeting: September 29, 2018 in Huntington – Marshall won 4-2.
Marshall is coming off a big win over the 2018 National Championship runners-up Akron Zips, 2-1, Saturday night in front of a lively crowd at Hoops Family Field. Freshman Milo Yosef came through the game-winner in the 82nd minute for his third goal of the year. Earlier in the match, sophomore Jan-Erik Leinhos got Marshall on the board with the equalizer in the 79th minute on a successful penalty kick. So far, the Herd's only conference match was a 2-0 win over South Carolina at home. Marshall still has to face UAB, No. 11 Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, No. 23 Kentucky and No. 16 FIU. The matches with UAB and Kentucky are at home.
Yosef and junior Pedro Dolabella are tied for the team lead with three goals. Dolabella and junior Jamil Roberts are tied for the lead in points with seven as Dolabella also has one assist and Roberts has two goals and three assists. Leinhos has two goals this year while senior Jonas Westmeyer, sophomore Vinicius Fernandes, and freshmen Bleno Cruz and Max Schneider all have one goal each. The Herd has outscored the opposition 14-7, lead in shots 98-67 and shots on goal 44-28.
2019 Senior CLASS Award candidate, redshirt senior keeper Paulo Pita, has been rock-steady in the net. Pita is the only Herd player to log all 650 minutes this season. He has allowed seven goals, has a 0.97 goals against average, tallied 19 saves and carries a .731 save percentage. He has two shutouts this year as well.
Opponent
The Old Dominion Monarchs were picked to finish third in the Conference USA Preseason poll. ODU didn't pick up its first win of the year until the fifth match with a 3-1 victory over VCU on Sept. 17. In conference play, the Monarchs played to a 1-1 draw against UAB and are coming off a 5-0 loss at now No. 16 FIU this past Saturday (Sept. 21). Deniz Dogan leads the team in scoring with four goals off eight shots on target. Jimmy Filerman, Sebastien Hauret and Simon Falck have one goal each. Kostas Mylonas has two assists. Djibril Doumbia has been the keeper for all 580 minutes this year. Doumbia has allowed 14 goals, has a 2.17 goals against average, 25 saves and a .641 save percentage.
Following the match in Norfolk, Marshall returns to Hoops Family Field for two more matches before hitting the road for six-straight. The Herd takes on Dayton on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. Marshall will play UAB on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m., at home before hitting the stretch on the road.
