NORFOLK, Va. – The Marshall men's soccer team grabbed its second Conference USA win with a convincing 4-1 victory over the Old Dominion Monarchs, Friday night. Freshman Milo Yosef led the way with two goals.
The Thundering Herd improves to 6-1-1 and 2-0-0 in C-USA play. The Monarchs fall to 1-5-1 and 0-2-1 in conference action.
"We were excellent in the first half, and the early goal was excellently worked by the lads," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "I thought we had five or six really good chances in the first half and should've put the game away. But, credit to ODU they made it a game of two halves. They threw a lot of numbers at us, and put a lot of balls in and around our box.
"We lacked a bit of composure so we missed opportunities to catch them on the counter. But after they scored, we were able to put the game away comfortably by being calm on the ball playing with rhythm and finding our forward. They made great runs today and we looked dangerous every time we attacked."
Yosef, with his two goals, now leads the Herd with five this season. Junior Jamil Roberts had two assists and leads the team with five.
Marshall got the offense rolling immediately. Yosef took a pass from Roberts and sent it in to the net just 48 seconds into the match. In the 15th minute, freshman Joao Souza took another pass from Roberts and put the Herd ahead 2-0 with his first career goal. Marshall maintained the 2-0 advantage for the remainder of the half. The Herd outshot Old Dominion 8-2 in the first period as well as 5-0 on goal.
The teams battled in the second half as the Monarchs tried to turn up the intensity. ODU made it a one goal game as Sebastien Hauret scored with just over 10 minutes left in regulation. Marshall then made some quick work getting the ball downfield to its attacking end. Yosef scored his second of the match just over three minutes later on an assist from freshman Max Schneider. One minute and 41 seconds later, freshman Vitor Dias found the back of the net for his first career goal on a pass from junior Pedro Dolabella.
Marshall held off the Monarchs over the final five minutes and 23 seconds for the 4-1 win. Redshirt senior keeper Paulo Pita finished the match with five saves. He now has 95 saves in his Marshall career and picked up his 13th career win.
The Herd returns to the pitch at Hoops Family Field, Tuesday Oct. 1 at 7 p.m., against the Dayton Flyers.
