Herd picks up seventh win

Box Score (PDF)

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall men's soccer team recorded its seventh win of the season after the shutout of the Dayton Flyers, 2-0, Tuesday night at Hoops Family Field.

The Thundering Herd improved to 7-1-1 while the Flyers fall to 5-5. Marshall again was just outside of the NCAA/United Soccer Coaches Poll announced Tuesday. The Herd received 29 votes and sit at No. 26 overall.

"This was big as a midweek game against a non-conference opponent," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "They are doing very well and we know what they are going to come with, very similar to ODU. For the match could we stay focused and professional about it and get the win and prove that we have championship credentials and I think they showed that.

"I challenged the guys, I said 'look you cannot talk about a clean sheet. We are not going to let teams break us down. We are fumbling around and making mistakes and we are giving them cheap goals on rebounds. So we need to stay focused for 90 minutes.' And they really delivered that tonight. Some great saves by Paulo (Pita) and I think our back line was terrific today. I think this is the proudest I've been and an even better performance than the Akron game."

Dayton began the match with the offensive pressure for the first few minutes until Marshall turned it on and got the ball back into the attacking end. The Herd tallied seven corner kicks in the span of just under eight minutes, but the Flyer defense came through with the stops. Freshman Max Schneider got Marshall on the board first with a header near the goal off a free kick from senior Jonas Westmeyer in the 29th minute. Following the goal, Dayton had a couple opportunities however redshirt senior keeper Paulo Pita came through with the saves.

The Marshall defense played well in the second half to keep the ball away from Dayton and to cut off some chances. Pita tallied four more saves in the second half and finished the match with six. Pita picked up his seventh career shutout and is now tied for seventh in program history with Greg Terhune (2003-06). Marshall doubled its lead in the 74th minute on an own goal from Dayton. Westmeyer sent a corner kick to the far left side that slipped through the keeper's hands and then right off the head of a Flyer defender into the net. Marshall held on for the remainder of the match for the victory.

The Herd has one more home contest before heading out on the road for a six-match trip. Marshall welcomes UAB to Hoops Family Field on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. It will be the Herd's third Conference USA match of the year.
