HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall men's soccer team kept lighting up the scoreboard in a 6-0 victory over the UAB Blazers, Saturday night at Hoops Family Field. A season-high crowd of over 700 watched as six different players scored a goal for Marshall.

The Thundering Herd improves to 8-1-1 overall and 3-0-0 in Conference USA. The Blazers fall to 1-7-1 and 0-3-1 in conference play.

"It is off the scoreboard stuff that happened tonight that helps make the win," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "The guys really stepped up tonight. I was worried about complacency with all the talk of possibly being ranked and all of the interviews the guys are doing, and we just didn't want it to go to their heads. I challenged them a bit and they exceeded my expectations tonight.

"They didn't take it for granted and they executed the game plan perfectly. They were solid, they were tough. It was quite a comprehensive victory and they didn't let down for one second in the game. I feel like I have been getting prouder every week."

Scoring in the match were redshirt freshman Milo Yosef, junior Pedro Dolabella, senior Jonas Westmeyer, junior Jamil Roberts, freshman Joao Souza and sophomore Jan-Erik Leinhos.

The match started with UAB on the attack and holding much of the possession for the first five minutes. But as the sun set lower and lower at Hoops Family Field, the Herd turned on the jets and began to take over. Yosef scored the first goal of the match, his sixth of the season, in the 10th minute off two quick touch passes from Dolabella and Roberts. In the 25th minute, Dolabella found the back of the net off a long strike on the run for his fourth goal of the year. The Herd fired one more into the net less than four minutes later as Westmeyer scored off an assist from sophomore Vinicius Fernandes.

Marshall went in to the halftime break leading 3-0.

The Herd kept up the pressure in the second half as many opportunities came along, but the shots were just missing. However, in the 60th minute Roberts fired a laser shot from about 22 yards out off a corner kick from Westmeyer, and beat the keeper into the top corner of the goal. For Roberts it was his third goal of the year and Marshall led 4-0.

In the 69th minute Souza joined the scoring party with a quick right-footed touch on a pass from Roberts. It was the second goal of the year for Souza and the second assist of the night for Roberts and team-leading seventh of the year. Finally, Leinhos put his name into the stat sheet as he fired in a long distance shot off a corner kick from Westmeyer in the 85th minute. It was Leinhos's third goal of the year and again the second assist of the match for Westmeyer.

Marshall outshot UAB 18-2. Both shots for the Blazers were on goal and redshirt senior keeper Paulo Pita was there to make the stop. It was Pita's fourth shutout of the season and also back-to-back clean sheets as the Herd shut out Dayton earlier this week.

The win over UAB featured the most goals Marshall has scored in a match against the Blazers. It was also the most goals scored in a single contest since the Herd put up seven in a 7-0 win over Asbury back on Oct. 3, 2012.
