Box Score (PDF)
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Marshall men's soccer team showcased its ability to match up with the top teams in the country, battling for 110 minutes to a 0-0 draw at No. 5 Charlotte Saturday night.
The Thundering Herd is now 8-1-2 and 3-0-1 in Conference USA. The 49ers move to 8-0-3 and 3-0-2 in conference action.
"I'm really proud of the lads tonight," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "We were by far the better team tonight and played great soccer. To come to a team like this and dominate the match makes me very proud of these guys. Charlotte is very tough at home, they play for restarts and knockdowns and are dangerous. We dealt with it masterfully tonight and should've had a goal for our efforts. We hit the post and had more than a few saved on the line.
"But we can take great confidence from this performance. Now we focus on Loyola Marymount, and our next match there on Tuesday."
Marshall has been receiving votes for the past three weeks and has been one of the top in the "also receiving votes" category just outside of the Top 25. The Herd is looking to break into the Top 25 rankings for the first time since Oct. 1, 2001, when Marshall was 23rd in the NCAA. Charlotte has been working its way higher and higher through the rankings all season and fifth was its highest spot of the year so far.
The Herd and the 49ers played a 0-0 draw back on Oct. 21, 2014 in Huntington, when Charlotte was ranked No. 7 in the country. So far, going back through the 1996 season, the highest ranked team that Marshall defeated was the 11th ranked South Carolina Gamecocks on Oct. 14, 2006 at the old Sam Hood Field in Huntington.
The Herd outshot Charlotte Saturday night, 12-7. Marshall was able to put five shots on goal, however Elliot Panicco recorded all five saves. The 49ers had just two shots on goal and redshirt senior keeper Paulo Pita was there to stop both attempts.
Marshall kept the pressure on the Charlotte defense for most of the match. The Herd had seven corner kicks to the 49ers's four.
Redshirt freshman Milo Yosef and sophomore Vinicius Fernandes both fired two shots with one on goal for Yosef. In the 77th minute, the first shot from Fernandes just missed as it hit the post on the far side. Four other players had an attempt on goal with seniors Carlos Diaz-Salcedo and Illal Osmanu, junior Jamil Roberts and freshman Max Schneider.
Five players for the Herd stayed out on the pitch for all 110 minutes with Pita, Diaz-Salcedo, Schneider, Osmanu and redshirt sophomore Collin Mocyunas putting in work for the full run. Sophomore Jan-Erik Leinhos, the only player who has started every game for Marshall over the past two seasons, logged 102 minutes.
Marshall's long road trip continues as the Herd heads west out to Los Angeles, Calif. for a match at Loyola Marymount on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 10 p.m. eastern. Then, Marshall travels south about 130 miles for a match at San Diego State on Friday, Oct. 18 at 10 p.m. eastern.
