LOS ANGELES – The Marshall men's soccer team travels all the way across the country to take on the Loyola Marymount Lions, Tuesday night at 7 p.m. pacific, 10 p.m. eastern.
The Thundering Herd enters the match with an 8-1-2 overall record and has been one of the top "also receiving votes" teams just outside of the Top 25 for the past three weeks in the NCAA/United Soccer Coaches Poll which comes out on Tuesday. Marshall is looking to break into the Top 25 for the first time since Oct. 1, 2001, when the Herd was 23rd. The Lions come in at 6-3-3 overall and are also receiving votes.

Series History: First ever meeting
Marshall is coming off three-straight shutouts including the most recent on the road at No. 5 Charlotte. The Herd outplayed the 49ers in what ultimately finished as a 0-0, double-overtime draw. Marshall outshot Charlotte 12-7 and 5-2 on goal. Redshirt senior keeper Paulo Pita made both stops. Senior defender Illal Osmanu was named Co-Defensive Player of the Week as he led the defense in the shutout, making it back-to-back weekly honors from Conference USA for Osmanu.
Redshirt freshman Milo Yosef leads the Herd in goals with six and has hit four game-winners. Junior Jamil Roberts leads in assists with seven and points with 13. Roberts has also scored three goals this year. In the net, Pita has played all 1,030 minutes in 2019. He has allowed just eight goals and has a 0.70 goals against average which is good for second in Conference USA and ranks 21st in the NCAA. The redshirt senior also carries a .810 save percentage that is tops in C-USA and 21st in the country.
Opponent
The Loyola Marymount Lions started the year 5-1-1 and were ranked No. 24 back on Sept. 24. However, the team has hit a rough patch going 1-2-2 over its last five contests. The Lions are still receiving votes in the latest poll (Oct. 8) and are coming off a 1-0, overtime victory at home against West Coast Conference foe Gonzaga. Dylan Shockey scored his first goal of the season in the 93rd minute to give the Lions the win.
Loyola Marymount has outscored its competition 16-9, with 10 different players scoring at least one goal. Duhaney Williams and C.J. Neville lead the team with three goals each. Williams and Brandon Sanchez, who both assisted on Shockey's game-winner, are tied for the team lead with three assists.
The Lions have used two keepers in net this season with Jacob Jackson getting the bulk of the action with 10 starts and 964 minutes. Jackson has a 6-1-3 record, allowed six goals, has a 0.56 goals against average and a .857 save percentage. Alfredo Cortez is 0-2 as he got the start in the season-opener against No. 16 Virginia Tech and again on Oct. 6 at Western Michigan. Cortez allowed just three goals combined in the two losses.
