Yosef with two goals and one assist in the victory
LOS ANGELES – The No. 21 ranked Marshall men's soccer team scored early and often in a 4-1 win at Loyola Marymount, Tuesday night. Redshirt freshman Milo Yosef scored two goals and had one assist.
The Thundering Herd improves to 9-1-2 overall for the year. The Lions fall to 6-4-3.
"It was a really crazy match," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "A definite game of two halves. We dominated the first half with three nice goals. Then in the second half, the match became very physical and there were a lot of heavy challenges and restarts we had to deal with. LMU moves the ball well and we had to respond. I thought Paulo (Pita) managed his area very well and was a safe pair of hands for us. Milo (Yosef) and Jamil (Roberts) took the pressure off us with their forward play and their goals.
"It was great preparation for San Diego State, as they are a really physical team. So we've had good preparation tonight."
Just earlier in the day on Tuesday, Marshall cracked the Top 25 in the NCAA/United Soccer Coaches Poll for the first time since October of 2001, with its highest ranking in program history at No. 21. The Herd had been receiving votes for the three previous weeks as one of the top "also receiving votes" teams.
The Herd came out firing early and junior Pedro Dolabella got Marshall on the board first in the 19th minute. Dolabella headed in a cross off the corner kick from senior Jonas Westmeyer. For Dolabella it was his fifth goal of the season and the sixth assist of the year for Westmeyer.
It took less than three minutes for the Herd to find the back of the net again as junior Jamil Roberts tapped one in off some touch passing from Dolabella and Yosef. Roberts scored his fourth goal of the year, Dolabella tallied his fourth assist of the season and Yosef nabbed his first collegiate assist.
Again, not even three minutes came off the clock as in the 25th minute Yosef scored his first goal of the game off a great pass from Roberts. Roberts leads the team with eight assists and is now ninth all-time at Marshall with 13 in his career. Marshall held off the Lions for the remainder of the half and went into the break leading 3-0. The Herd outshot Loyola Marymount 7-2 and 5-0 on goal in the first half.
In the second half, the Lions came out on the attack and tallied five shots before Marshall had its first of the half in the 62nd minute. LMU got on the board taking advantage of a penalty kick opportunity in the 64th minute. With the Herd lead cut to two, 3-1, the Lions continued to try and fight for the comeback. The Marshall defense was up to the task and even took an opportunity to get the ball back downfield as Yosef scored his second goal of the night in the 84th minute. The unassisted goal put the lead back to three, 4-1. The score gave Yosef his eighth goal of the season and his second match of the year with two goals.
Redshirt senior keeper Paulo Pita recorded three saves in the win.
