No. 21 Men’s Soccer Tallies 10th Win of Season at San Diego State

Yosef with back-to-back matches with two goals

SAN DIEGO – The 21st-ranked Marshall men's soccer team exploded for four goals in the second half to grab its 10th win of the year 5-1, Friday night at San Diego State. Redshirt freshman Milo Yosef scored two goals for the second consecutive match, and the third time this season.

The Thundering Herd is now 10-1-2 overall. Marshall has reached 10 wins in a season for the first time since 2012 when the Herd finished 11-5-1. San Diego State drops to 3-8-1.

"We started quote slow, but to be fair, the pitch took a minute to get used to; it was fast, narrow and very slick," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "They also came out full throttle as well, so it looked like pinball for a while in the first half. We settled down and were excellent, and by the second half we had a strangle hold on the match.

"We dominated possession in the second half and we looked dangerous every time we went forward. I thought Vitor (Dias) did an awesome job transitioning from defense to attack, and Milo (Yosef) was deadly again tonight.

"A great trip out to the west coast. We learned a lot about ourselves. Now we're looking forward to getting back to Huntington for a few days before Wright State."

Yosef, now with 10 goals for the year, is the first Marshall player to score at least 10 goals in a season since Tom Jackson in 2011.

The first half began with the Aztecs keeping control of the possession as Marshall was getting into a rhythm. About midway through the period, the Herd began to take over and turn on the pressure. With a chance at a breakaway in the 28th minute, redshirt freshman Milo Yosef was taken down inside the 18-yard box. A yellow card was issued to San Diego State's Kyle Colonna and the Herd was granted a penalty kick. Sophomore Jan-Erik Leinhos, starting his 33rd-straight match, converted the penalty kick pushing it passed the keeper to the far side.

Two minutes and 58 seconds later, the Aztecs hit the equalizer off a corner kick. It was the first goal that Marshall had allowed in the first half all season. The teams went into the break tied at 1-1.

San Diego State outshot the Herd 6-5 in the first half, but it was even 2-2 in shots on goal with both keepers making one save.

The second half was a dominant performance by Marshall putting up four more goals on the scoreboard and outshooting the Aztecs 11-2. Sophomore Vitor Dias was the first to score in the second half for Marshall taking the pass from freshman Joao Souza to give the Herd the lead 2-1 in the 48th minute.

Yosef netted his first goal of the match in the 66th minute after tapping in a pass from senior Jonas Westmeyer into the low far post. Eight minutes and 19 seconds later, Yosef scored again on a breakaway, receiving a pass from Dias. Yosef again beat the keeper to the far post. Marshall led 4-1.

In the 78th minute, two defenders for San Diego State attempted to head a crossing pass out of bounds and instead sent it into the back of the net for an own goal. It was the second own goal of the season scored for the Herd as the first came in the win over Dayton on Oct. 1. Redshirt senior keeper Paulo Pita finished the match with two saves including a diving effort to stop an attempt off a corner kick in the 77th minute.

Marshall has a total of 35 goals in 2019, already surpassing its 2018 total of 32 and with four regular season matches remaining.

The Herd returns to the eastern time zone for a road match at Wright State on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m.
