No. 15 Men’s Soccer Plays to Draw at Wright State

10/22/2019 10:19:00 PM | Men's Soccer

Dias and Dolabella score for Herd

DAYTON, Ohio – The Marshall men's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw at Wright State, Tuesday night. Sophomore Vitor Dias and junior Pedro Dolabella scored for the 15th-ranked Herd.

The Thundering Herd is now 10-1-3 while the Raiders are 6-5-2.

"It was a frustrating evening for sure," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "We had two lapses in concentration and they caught us both times. We saw after their match against Duke, that if you don't finish your chances they will continue to fight and counter. That's exactly what happened. We had so many chances, but only scored two, and we weren't focused enough to prevent them from catching us.

"It's almost a carbon copy of WSU at Duke. It's matches like this where you need extra concentration. We dominated possession against their low block, and we create plenty of chances, we just need to finish them. Sometimes the game becomes almost too easy when you have that kind of possession and territory, and we switch off. That's when they caught us. That's college soccer.

"Although we're upset with the result, it's still a tie, so not the worst thing in the world away from home. I will expect a response from the lads at FAU for sure. They owe that to themselves."

Dias scored his third goal of the season in the 20th minute off a pass from redshirt freshman Milo Yosef. Marshall outshot Wright State 7-4 in the first half. The Raiders also picked up three yellow cards in the first 45 minutes. The Herd led 1-0 at the break.

Wright State scored the equalizer in the 58th minute. The teams battled for position back-and-forth throughout the half. In the 86th minute, Dolabella sent in a header off a crossing pass from freshman Joao Souza. The Herd took the lead with under four minutes remaining. However, the Raiders responded under a minute later and tied the match at 2-2.

The match moved into overtime. In the first extra period, Wright State outshot Marshall 3-1 with just one on goal. Redshirt senior keeper Paulo Pita was there to make the save. In the second overtime, shots were even 2-2, and this time Marshall had a shot on goal but just could not get it passed the Wright State keeper.

Over the entire match, Marshall held the advantage in shots, 17-12 and 7-4 in shots on goal. Seven total yellow cards were issued with the Raiders getting five.

Marshall returns to Huntington for a few days to prepare for its next match, on the road at Florida Atlantic. The match in Boca Raton, Fla., is set for Saturday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. It will be Marshall's fifth Conference USA match and fifth-straight road contest.
