Volleyball Finally Set for Home and Conference-Opener versus Southern Miss

First serve on the brand new floor in the Cam Henderson Center is set for Friday at 6 p.m.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – After spending the first four weeks and 13 matches on the road, the Marshall volleyball team is ready to play in front of the home crowd, Friday at 6 p.m., as Southern Miss visits the Cam Henderson Center. It is both the home and Conference USA-opener for the Herd.
Marshall enters the match with a 9-4 record while the Golden Eagles come in at 0-12.

The Herd volleyball squad will be the first to play on the brand new floor in the Cam Henderson Center on Friday. The team has had a strong start to the season with eight of its nine wins by a sweep.
Marshall also enters the C-USA opener ranked No. 4 in the country in blocks per set with 3.04. The Herd has been dominant at the net as the team is just 25 blocks away from surpassing its total in all of 2018. Sophomore Isa Dostal is 23rd in the nation in blocks per set with 1.46 and junior Destiny Leon is 31st at 1.39 per set. Marshall leads the conference in blocks as Charlotte is next with 2.32 per set. Dostal and Leon are also one and two, respectively, in the league.
The Herd has already hit double-digits in total blocks in eight matches this year including a season-high 22 against Morehead State. It was the first time since Nov. 1, 2003 against Bowling Green that Marshall has recorded at least 20 blocks in a contest. Both Leon and freshman Megan Taylor had their hands in 10 or more in the match against Morehead State.
Also on defense, senior libero Amber Weber leads the team in digs with 191, an average of 4.15 per set. Weber, along with Leon, was named to the Comfort Inn-vitational All-Tournament Team. Redshirt junior Ciara Debell has tallied over 100 digs as well this season with 113 and is second on the team.
On the offensive side, Debell continues to lead Marshall in kills with 195 as she is averaging 4.24 per set, good for fourth in C-USA. Sophomore Sarah Schank is second on the team with 98. Leon has 79 this year and has a .345 hitting percentage. Sophomore Gabrielle Coulter leads the Herd in assists with 275 and junior Sydney Lostumo is second with 188. Lostumo leads the team with 12 service aces as Coulter and Schank are right behind with 11 each.
Opponent
It has been a rough start to the season for Southern Miss at 0-12 as the team has also won only two sets. Ten of the Golden Eagles losses have come by the sweep. There are just five returners from the 2018 team that finished 17-15 and fell to FIU in the second round of the Conference USA Tournament. The 2019 Golden Eagles feature seven freshmen and five transfers. Head coach Stephanie Radecki is in her second season leading Southern Miss after racking up 326 wins in 14 years at North Alabama.
Two freshmen are leading the team in kills with Kess Krutsinger at 63 and Gillian Hidalgo with 61. Ashley Berry, one of two seniors on the roster, is third in kills with 58. Junior transfer from LIU Brooklyn, Piper Matsumoto has been the main setter and leads with 236 assists. Southern Miss has a team hitting percentage of .142, last in the conference. On the other side Marshall is third with a .252 percentage.
On defense, libero and returner Madison Lawler leads the team in digs with 135. At the net, Southern Miss is averaging 1.38 blocks per set and Krutsinger leads with 18 total blocks. Kaile Tuisamatatele and Chloe Klusman are next with 12 blocks each.
After the match against Southern Miss, Marshall gets to stay at home for one more match as the FIU Panthers come to Huntington on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. The Panthers were the 2018 Conference USA Tournament runners-up.
