HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall volleyball team got off to a great start in Conference USA play with a sweep (25-16, 25-17, 25-16) of the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, Friday night in the Cam Henderson Center in front of a lively crowd.

The Thundering Herd improves to 10-4 overall and now 1-0 in conference play. Southern Miss falls to 0-13 overall and 0-1 in conference.

"It was amazing," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said of her first home match. "The atmosphere in here was something that I didn't expect and we couldn't be happier that we had so many people come out. Beyond that, being able to get a win in your first home game is awesome. The girls played so well I couldn't be happier.

"The players are sticking to the plan and not getting comfortable. That is what we are trying to instill in them, to never get settled and worry about the score at any point. They are working hard to earn every point."

On a night when senior libero Amber Weber was honored pregame for recording her 1,000th career dig earlier this season, she led the Herd all over the floor and came away with 19 more. Weber now has 1,051 career digs as well as 925 during her three seasons at Marshall as she played at South Florida her freshman season. The Herd as a team recorded just four total blocks as Southern Miss worked to keep the ball in play.

On the offensive side, redshirt junior Ciara Debell led all players with 15 kills, now up to 610 in her career with 599 coming with the Herd after spending her freshman season at Florida Gulf Coast. Sophomores Sarah Schank and Isa Dostal had seven kills each and Dostal came away with a .545 hitting percentage. Senior Ivana Trencheva, junior Destiny Leon and sophomore Mion Weldon all had five kills each.

Junior Sydney Lostumo led in assists with 19 and added a season-high five service aces. Sophomore Gabrielle Coulter tallied 16 assists and one sneaky kill in the third set.

The first set had four ties and one lead change with Marshall taking the lead for good at 8-7. Four times the Golden Eagles pulled back within one point but the Herd continued to keep the advantage. Southern Miss closed it to one for the last time at 15-14, but Marshall used a 5-0 run with two kills by Debell, one from Dostal and two Lostumo aces to take the commanding 21-14 lead. Debell's seventh kill of the set ended it, 25-16, and put the Herd up 1-0.

There were four ties and two lead changes in the second set, however Marshall took the lead for good at 5-4. The Herd had three runs of 3-0 in the set to keep pulling away. Three-straight errors from Southern Miss gave Marshall the final three points to take the second set, 25-17, and go up 2-0.

The home crowd of almost 800 got even louder for the third set as Marshall looked to take the sweep as it was déjà vu with a tight match in the beginning, and then the Herd pulling away. Marshall took the lead at 5-4 and never looked back. A powerful spike from Weldon moved it to match-point, 24-17, and then Debell finished it off with her 15th kill of the night.

Marshall returns to the Cam Henderson Center floor on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m., against the FIU Panthers.
