Men’s Soccer Ready for 2019 Home-Opener at Hoops Family Field

Kickoff against Butler set for Friday at 7 p.m.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall men's soccer team, after playing the first two matches of the year on the road, is ready for the home-opener against the Butler Bulldogs. Kickoff is set for Friday at 7 p.m. from Hoops Family Field.
Marshall is 1-0-1 and Butler is 2-0.

Last Meeting: Sept. 26, 2018 at Butler – The Bulldogs won 4-3 in overtime.
The Thundering Herd began the year with a 3-0 win at Purdue and then battled through a 1-1 draw at Northern Kentucky this past Monday night. Marshall was forced to play a man down for just over 102 minutes as senior defender Carlos Diaz-Salcedo was dealt a red card in the eighth minute. The Herd scored first as senior Jonas Westmeyer beat the defense down the field for a goal in the 39th minute. NKU rebounded in the second half with a goal 28 seconds into the period. From there, the Marshall defense and especially redshirt senior keeper Paulo Pita did a great job to disrupt shots throughout the remainder of the match. Pita finished with six saves including several diving stops in the second half.
Four different players have scored a goal for the Herd. Westmeyer leads in points with three (one goal & one assist). Junior Pedro Dolabella, redshirt freshman Milo Yosef and sophomore Jan-Erik Leinhos have the other three goals. Freshmen Joao Souza and Max Schneider have one assist each. Leinhos has the longest active consecutive starts streak with the last 22 matches. In the net, Pita has played all 200 minutes to begin the season, allowed one goal, has a 0.45 goals against average, seven saves and an .875 save percentage. Senior defender Illal Osmanu has also played all 200 minutes.
Opponent
The Bulldogs come to Huntington for the first time in program history, and off wins over Western Michigan (2-1) and Evansville (2-0). Butler has outshot the opposition 27-16 and 12-8 in shots on goal. Senior Brandon Guhl leads the team in scoring with two goals. Freshman Wilmer Cabrera Jr. and sophomore Logan Lee have one goal each. Sophomore Jack Haywood has contributed two assists.
Sophomore keeper Gabriel Gjergji has played all 180 minutes to begin the season and has allowed just one goal to go with seven saves. Gjergji sports a 0.50 goals against average and an .875 save percentage. Junior defender Joel Harvey has also been on the field for every minute.
Butler head coach Paul Snape and Marshall head coach Chris Grassie were assistants together at the University of Michigan from 2007-10. Snape was hired at Butler in January of 2011, the same time that Grassie was hired at the University of Charleston.
