Scouting the Monarchs
Old Dominion comes into Saturday's game following a 76-65 home victory over WKU. The Monarchs are led by Victoria Morris's 11.9 points and 2.6 steals per contest. Amari Young averages a team-high 7.6 rebounds and Taylor Edwards chips in 2.9 assists per contest. Meanwhile, Marie Reichert contributes 1.5 blocks in the post. Morris is also the team's top 3-point threat, shooting just a shade under 40 percent (39.8).

Old Dominion was picked fifth in the league's preseason poll. Ajah Wayne had a spectacular performance against the Lady Hilltoppers on Thursday, with 23 points and 10 rebounds on 9-for-12 shooting. Morris also collected 19 points, making six of her 12 3-point attempts.

The Monarchs lead the league in scoring defense (53.8) and scoring margin (+12.3), but are 10th in free throw percentage (64.0).

Last Time Out: Jan. 16 at Charlotte (L, 52-46)
Jade Phillips recorded another double-double of 16 points and 16 rebounds to lift host Charlotte to a 52-46 victory over the visiting Marshall women's basketball team Thursday evening.

The 49ers improved to 11-4 overall and 2-2 in Conference USA, while the Thundering Herd dropped to 7-9 and 2-3 in league play.

Marshall got 10 points apiece from Taylor Pearson, Kristen Mayo and Savannah Wheeler and Khadaijia Brooks posted a team-high nine rebounds. Brooks and Wheeler had three assists apiece.

Phillips got her numbers amidst a tough shooting night (6-for-20) from the field. She wasn't the only one to struggle shooting, however, as both teams mustered field goal percentages below 30 percent (Charlotte 27.3, Marshall 26.4). Mariah Linney added 11 points for the 49ers before leaving with a fourth-quarter injury. Jada McMillan added four assists and 11 rebounds, as well.

Marshall trailed for much of the closely-contested game before clawing back to within two (45-43) on a Mayo free throw with 47 seconds left.

McMillan then made one of two free throws to push the margin back to three but Marshall was unable to convert on the ensuing possession. The 49ers then made six free throws down the stretch to put the contest out of reach.

The 49ers were able to force 11 Marshall turnovers in the first half, but the Herd took better care in the second, with just five miscues.

Charlotte, who is 6-0 against Marshall in Halton Arena, also won the rebounding battle 49-35, points off turnovers (12-4) and points in the paint (26-16).

"Our competitiveness seems to have improved over the last two or three weeks," said Marshall head coach Tony Kemper. "I wish I had a solution for the shooting. I do believe in our shooters, but we're searching on that end a little bit. Our defense was unbelievable again. That's a good offensive team and to hold them to 52 … that part is good."

Defensive Struggle
The 98 combined points between Charlotte and Marshall were the fewest in a Thundering Herd game since February 7, 2015 when North Texas edged Marshall 45-42 in Denton.

Wheeler Attacks
Since entering the starting lineup at North Texas on January 4, Savannah Wheeler has gotten to the free throw line 31 times in those last four games (7.8 per game), making 27 for 87.1 percent. In her previous 12 games, she got to the charity stripe just 38 times (3.2 per contest).

Leading and Leading Late
Marshall is 7-1 this season when leading at the half and 6-1 when leading with five minutes left in regulation. Since the beginning of last season, the Thundering Herd is 20-6 when leading at the break and 20-3 when leading at the five-minute mark.

Hitting the Glass, Controlling the Paint
The Thundering Herd is 14-4 since the start of last season when it outrebounds the opposition and 16-3 when it scores more in the paint.

Career-High
Kristen Mayo made a career-high seven free throws in Thursday's loss at Charlotte.

Block Party
Senior Ashley Saintigene has returned to the Herd lineup with a vengeance this season on the defensive side. The senior has swatted 45 shots in 15 games to start the year. She has rejected at least one shot in each game and has had two or more in 14 contests. Her season-high thus far is five in a win over Coppin State (11/19). Saintigene is currently ninth in the NCAA in blocks per game (3.0). As a team, Marshall is 16th in the country in blocks per game (5.4).

The Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., native is fourth all-time in program history in blocked shots with 126 and her 45 this season puts her sixth in Marshall's single-season records. She became the seventh player to hit the century mark with her third and final block at Evansville. Saintigene had an excellent start to her career with 42 blocks (1.45 per game) in her freshman season, seventh-most in Marshall history. She tallied just 22 her sophomore season as she only played in 12 games (1.83 per game) after suffering an injury. Saintigene came back to the Herd briefly in 2018-19 playing in just nine games before re-aggravating the injury, but still came away with 17 more swats (1.89 per game). The Herd record for most in a season is 117 by Sharon Deal in 1988-89. Deal averaged 4.2 per game which is still a Southern Conference record. Deal is also Marshall's all-time leader with 188 in a career that spanned just two seasons (1987-89).
