Kinsey’s 27 Points, West’s Double-Double Not Enough in Men’s Basketball Loss at UTSA

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Marshall men's basketball (12-14, 6-7 C-USA) couldn't find the mark in the second half as it fell at UTSA, 72-63, on Thursday night in San Antonio. The Herd clinched a spot in pod two of bonus play as UTEP fell to WKU on Thursday night in El Paso.
Taveion Kinsey poured a game-high 27 points into the basket in the contest on a 10-for-22 night from the field. The sophomore guard added five rebounds to his stat line.
Junior Jarrod West followed up Kinsey with 15 points and a career-high 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season and his career, while also having a game-high five assists in the contest.
Junior Mikel Beyers had his second straight game in double figures with 10 points and added four blocks, tying his career high set on Dec. 11, 2019 against Bluefield State.
Marshall came out of the gate hot scoring the first four points of the game and held a lead of eight points 14-6 at the 13:54 mark of the opening half for its largest lead.
However, the Roadrunners weren't ready to give up and cut at the Herd lead across the next several minutes and until they grabbed their first lead, 22-20, with 7:30 left in the first half.
After trailing for nearly the next seven minutes, MU closed out the half with a 9-0 run to take a four-point lead, 38-34, into the break. Kinsey scored 17 points in the first half for the Herd making seven of his 12 shots from the field.
UTSA opened the second half on an 11-0 run to retake the lead at 45-38 ad never trailed the rest of the way.
Marshall struggled from the field in the second half making seven of its 32 attempts from the field, 1-for-11 from three-point range.
UP NEXT
Marshall finishes the roadtrip at UTEP on Saturday afternoon to close out the action before 'Bonus Play' is slated to begin next week.
